When I start the Chevrolet 2002, Malibu, all the dashboard lights (battery, oil, seat belt etc.), apart from the "check engine light" goes on and quickly turns off after a couple of seconds. This keeps happening for five minutes (lights turn on and off for longer periods of time). Eventually, the check engine light would turn on, so the car can start. Any ideas what is causing this problem? Thanks.

your alternator is likely on its way out. you should take your car to a trusted mechanics shop and have the charging system tested.Its only a matter of time until the alternator stops charging and you'll be stranded on the side of the road

hi bob, take off the oil filler cap, have someone crank the engine while you look inside, if the rockers are not moving, it is a broken or slipped belt, if the rockers are moving try a compression test to see if the problem is limited to one cylinder or all of them....does the sound of the engine cranking seem faster than normal? is there any noise (clanking/banging) while cranking? marty good luck let me know!

We had a similar situation. It took the dealer a few days to figure out it was an issue with the wiring harness(es) in the center console - around or behind the transmission shifter.
