SOURCE: battery not charging light comes on. new battery

I don't know what kink of car you have, but some will have a alternator fuse, also with a volt meter check voltage on big wire at back of alternator should have 13.5 + volt's, then check voltage at battery should have same voltage there also, do this with car running, if you do not have same voltage at battery less short between alternator and battery or bad fuse. There also some fuse links at starter on some car's.

SOURCE: 2002 Chevy Avalanche. Truck will not

Do a bench test on the starter. Remove starter, hook up a ground cable to starter, and positive to two prongs on starter and it should spin. You can do this in vechile too but not suggested due to risk of injury. If it doesn't spin, probally a solenoid or the starter it self. Unlikely but possible.

Hi and welcome to Fixya!

As a first course of action, I strongly suggest that you clean or replace the battery connectors if necessary. This may be the cause why the battery light is on.

Once the battery connectors are all set please tighten the cables.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

Hello, I have a 2003 navigator 5.4, 2 days ago warning light came on said check charging system (battery is only 6 months old), then last night went to store and when I came out truck wouldn't

your battery is so dead and or shorted it won't allow enough current to keep the truck running it could be a wire ground or positive not allowing enough current take the battery back to the place of purchase and have it tested it should be under warranty.I wouldn't try to start it by jumping it anymore try a fresh hot battery I think it will fix it

2003 Chevrolet Avalanche Problems

A bad catalytic converter can cause the decreased engine power, however it sounds like the alternator is not charging properly allowing your truck to draw power completely from the battery.

The warning light should be on when the alternator is not charging the battery. Are you saying you had the charging system checked on the truck and all is well ?

The battery in my avalanche is 6 months old. Truck starts but the sounds like the battery is weak. I don't want to be stranded. What should I do?

Hi:
I can understand you wanting peace of mind, so try a few simple things that don't cost much:

Inspect the battery and starter connections , make sure they are not corroded or loose.
If they look good, remove your battery and have it tested for free at a local auto parts store, like auto zone. Some shops , will check it for free, while still in the truck, so call ahead.

If it all is checking good,

Start the truck, and if you have a meter, check the voltage across the battery with the truck running, as it should be approx 14 volts, if it is less than 13, your alternator isn't charging the battery properly.

Beside's the stepper motor issue there can also be a problem with something called silver migration , this has to do with the solder used in the insturment cluster . This can cause a number of electrical problems most people would not even think possible .
