The rear end starts to humm when I apply the gas and stops when I take my foot off the gas.
Check the differential fluid in the rear differential. if the fluid is low, add fluid and see if the noise is still there, if the fluid level is ok see if the fluid appears metallic, if it is metallic looking or excessively thick it would be a good idea to have the bearings checked out. i am in the process of rebuilding a front differential on a 98 jeep grand cherokee for the same problem. the bearings inside the differential on the carrier and pinion gear were worn out causing a humming noise. if the wear is excessive the gears might also need to be replaced
to be honest i'm not sure how much a shop would charge to rebuild the differential. every shop is different when it comes to labor rates and parts pricing. your best bet is to call around and get estimates from a few different REPUTABLE shops. not every shop has a technician that has experience in rebuilding differentials so don't always go for the cheapest place in town. right now the automotive industry is hurting so a lot of places will take on the job even if they havent done it before. you don't want that. you want a place thats reasonably priced and has a good customer satisfaction rate.
