As i turn the ignition key on, the gauge goes all the way to max. then I hear a click on the passenger side of the car, and the gauge goes dead. I bought another instrument cluster, and the gauge on it does exactly the same thing. Is there a relay between the temp sensor and the gauge?
Pedro W. Torres.. Pretty sharp...!!
Buying a whole instrument cluster: Olds 1998..

PCM (power cont. module) fuse 8, (10 Amp)...
Pink serial "UART" serial data connection
required to position the "TEMP" gauge.
Hello and welcome to Fixya...
Totally FREE circuit drawings AND Technical
Service Bulletins (TSBs) are available for popular
USA market vehicles on BBB Industries website...
Registration is required... (as these are typically
\real FACTORY proprietary documents)...
Wholly inadequate...
There is a MODULE called the GUAGE TEST
MODULE: Supposed to peg the gauge...
(as a test) then release it for "data" control
(pink "UART" serial data connection)
Else... no other connections are depicted:
I would first check the FUSE (above)
replace then REPLACE the engine
temperature sender...
I would urge you to shop for PROFESSIONAL
grade WORKSHOP manuals... or to look for
well priced "real" FACTORY +WORKSHOP +
paper MANUALS if you are planning on keeping
this vehicle.
Happy hunting

Coolant Temperature Gauge
The coolant temperature gauge is also operated by 2 coils. Battery voltage is applied to both coils. One coil is grounded directly and the other coil is grounded through the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor. The ECT has 55 ohms resistance at 127°C (260°F). The resistance becomes greater at low temperatures. The resistance is approximately 1400 ohms at 38°C (100°F). This causes the current through the sensor and one coil to increase as the coolant temperature increases. This moves the pointer.
Probably the coolant temp sensor . have you tried that ? No, relay in the circuit .
SOURCE: Exterior Temperature Sensor
It is located in front of the AC condenser, most times the driver side, it is on a small metal bracket.
SOURCE: low coolant light
I have a 97 Cutlass. The low coolant light is on as well. After talking to some of my mechanic buddy's this is a know problem with this model of vehicle (Cutlass/Malibu). You can either replace the coolant reservoir with the sensor or just ignore the problem as even with replacing the parts it is likely to come back on.
Hope this helps
SOURCE: electrical problem with my olds aurora lights flicker and clicking sound
If you just clean the switch with contact cleaner, that will fix the problem. I had my 99 aurora's head lights came on and stayed on all the time. I bought contact cleaner 2-26 from Lowes for around 8 bucks and sprayed in the small holes in the switch and blowed with compressed air. Repetead it 2-3 times the problem was gone.
SOURCE: The cars temp gauge goes up and down, and looses
My mechanic has had my Silhouette for two weeks for the same problem. Engine Tempurature is running at 195 degrees when the gauge is pegged on overheat. Normal operating temp for this van is 220. So it is not overheating. Had the cooling/heating system flushed and refilled, bled and topped off. Still the gauge is up and down like a yoyo. Still looking for answers.

when engine is cold remove radiator cap and check coolant level, sounds like it is really low and has an air pocket in it.
