You first need to have the car's headlight beams project on a flat surface (garage door, inside garage wall, etc.) where you can watch the beams of light move as you correct the misalignment.
A number of car headlights have screws attached to the headlight housing that move the light in both horizontal and vertical planes.
Some vehicles also have bubble guides, where aligning the headlight by turning the screws puts the bubble in a spot that indicates that the light is correctly aligned.
By turning the screws and watching the light move against the surface, you can correct the alignment. Some car owner manuals will show how to align the headlights (my buick park ave manual does).
