1992 Saturn SC Fuel Pump Problem

1992 SC. Fuel pump replaced, worked for about 200 miles. Failed again, pump replaced again and failed. Fuses viewed as blown (fuel pump) and Ignition (MAXI). Replaced, no go. Oil Sending Unit replaced, all fuses verified as OK. Still no power being delivered to pump. Seems to be an obvious short somewhere. Any ideas?

Have Haynes with schematic..will trouble light / clean connectors and say a prayer..Thanks...will let ya know

  • jrz3 Feb 10, 2009

Well, all connectors were removed, fuses and relays. Sprayed with contact cleaner..let dry and re-attach. When moving of one of the plug-ins, dash light activated / de-activated was seen. I think I'm on the hunt for a fuse/relay junction assembly...more and more $$$$$$

    OK..FUSE/RELAY BOX (internal)
replaced. Power seen via test lamp on gray wire feeding fuel pump. When ignition activated, pump vibrates for a few seconds...low hum, but should be louder. Ground connections to body cleaned (inside trunk area). STILL NO START! Pump has been swapped (4 different ones). I am at a loss and ready to light it up. Help please!!!

You need to get the schematic / wiring diagram . There is a junction block in the center console where the wiring is routed to the entire car. The contact on the power wire to the pump gets burned /dirty and becomes intermittant . It needs to be cleaned .This happened to me twice.

Just Replaced the Water Pump....Still wont start??? If my Water Pump goes out while driving and I attempt to start the car several times, does this cause valve damage or any kind of damage?

Pulling plug wirs is a big mistake unless you know what your doing and you don't sound like you do. It sound like a frost plug is corroded away. You should be able to start your engine even if it had no coolant at al. the coolant only cools the engine ,it does not stop it from running. Now you need a wiring diagram for your engine to see if you have the wires in the right place.......otherwise the engine will not start ever.Worse case ....it could be a head gasket and if that is the case give it to someone whom wants a free car to work on themselves...............Ken

Cranks but no spark no fuel to fuel injectors

If you have tried starting fluid to verify there is no spark (use sparingly), a likely culprit is the crank sensor. The ignition module could also be at fault. If there is zero pressure at the fuel rail, the pump has failed. If pressure is low, the pump may be failing or the filter may be clogged. Check fuses and relays before investing in a new pump, sensor, or ignition module. If you have to guess and check, replace the fuel filter first, as it should be replaced periodically anyway, esp. if you end up replacing the fuel pump. It is also possible that a wiring harness has corroded or been broken if there is really no fuel at all and no spark at all.

When you turn the key the truck want start but you don't hear the gas pump running

the fuel pump has most likely failed, that is really all that goes wrong with the fuel pump system, if it has over 100,000 miles u can almost certainly suspect the pump, replace it.

Sl2 stalls while driving or when starting.

Wow... if the whole car is doing that i would guess it to be electrical issues.like a bad ground...basically a major cable that connects to your frame or directly to the negative side of the battery. You see, electricity leaves its source makes a device operate then the electricity goes back to the source. kinda like a big circle... when you start your car...the battery gets you going...then...the Alternator takes over...recharges the battery while making your car operate on an electrical standpoint. if you break that circle...lights out...be it the wires losing contact. battery failure( usually they STAY dead) or it could be an alternator with an intermittent problem. Based on a money stand point...your battery is fine...i'd replace the alternator...not trusting it after all that. (100- 300 bucks) if it STILL does it..then have a mechanic replace your wiring harness associated with the ignition, starter, alternator and battery( should be just one bundle of wires to fit that portion) .200 to 400 bucks to get that replaced. i hope this helps you out with finding out what the problem is...and i'm sorry to say...getting a fuel filter and fuel pump replacement would not cause a radio to lose power...the battery is like a back up system. don't go back to that mechanic ever again..as he is ripping you off. im an electrician so i know about electricity and i also tinker with cars quite a bit for fun.
