Freewheeling in drive

My 2002 Tribute acts like it is in free-wheel as I am driving at speeds anywhere between 30 to 60 M.P.H. The R.P.M.s stay constant, but it feels like it drops into gear for no reason. Like it has been rolling in neutral then it is put in gear. It does this randomly and usually when the car is not under a load. What do I need to check?

I don't let off of the gas. It is a difficult problem to explain. It happens on a residential street at 30 m.p.h. or on a highway at 60 m.p.h. My foot remains at a constant pressure on the foot-feed. I could understand if I let off the gas, but that's not the case. It feels like it's shifting or that the car has been rolling in a freewheel state when it then feels like it drops back into gear. I thought maybe the front-wheel drive mechanism needed attention. Maybe C.V. joints or U joints. Beats me. Your assistance is certainly appreciated. We plan to drive from Oklahoma to Galveston in March.

CV joints are solid no way they can freewheel.. same on front end joints. Strange usually this type thing is the transmission have you checked the fluid and made sure its at right level?. sorry on the Tribute I am not really familiar with it that well , I just figure its like most of them anyway and it also could have a modulator on the transmission which on some models are vacuum operated .. Could be a line off like on some .. you might want to look it over underneath also and check to see if anything has come disconnected like electric lines or vacuum hoses .. thanks Jerry

Usually this means you have a broken band in your transmission .. and it does let it freewheel when you let off the gas a bit .. its like coasting in neutral.. right ?jerry

I would check the sway bar linkages, they are usually the first to go, and they are only $40. Its an easy 'do it yourself' project, remove the old one with torches or a grinder (with a small cutting wheel). You can also use a vise grip and sockets but it takes longer.

You can't tell these are damaged until you remove the part. I change mine every 100 000km or so.

SOURCE: Mazda Tribute 2002 engine cuts out randomly

I had a Mazda 626 with a similar problem, the car seemed to 'shut down' with no warning, even at highway speeds, as if I just turned the ignition key to 'Off'; After trying to fix it unsuccessfully by replacing several electrical parts, the problem was found to be a defective ignition switch, it was replaced and the problem went away.

Sounds like bearings to me. Jack car up and check for play. may be hard to detect. May only be on one side. car is kind of new to have bearings going out. That it is quiet on turns is usually a dead giveaway, but usually only gets quiet when turning a certain direction and not the other.

Testimonial: "great job, ended up replacing both wheel bearings in the front, and that took care of problem. thank you..."

Car drives in reverse just fine, but as soon as I put it into drive it engages but won't go anywhere, what should I do???

Check the transmission fluid with the engine at operating temp and idling to make sure it's not low.If the vehicle has any type of mechanical linkage at the transmission, make sure it's connected properly and in the correct orientation.

Lots of noise comming from free wheel hub and bearing while in two wheel drive and just before comming to a stop it actually feels like it engages i took the free wheel hub off and the noise stopped a

the freewheeling hubs work when the axle is driving by transfereing the drive to the hubs from the axle. If you remove the hubs and the noise goes I suggest the problem is not in the hubs but in the cv joint just inside the hub. When you engage the F/Wheel hubs you are loading up these cv joints and if they are worn then that is when you will get the noise

2002 Expedtion 4x4 light does not come on

There may be some loose whires going into your transfer case which will disable the 4x4 light, your speedometer, and cruise control. And if u were in 4wd when a wire became loose then it will stay in 4wd until fixed. Also check any vaccum lines not connected.

My daughter's 2003 Mazda Tribute sometimes won't stay running. It will start but when you take your foot off the gas it stalls. She's had it towed home and then it starts right up!

if when running it runs well apart from idle problem i would suggest you have the throttle body and idle speed control valve cleaned out and add a fuel system cleaner to fuel tank also check wireing to idle speed control valve

Mazda tribute 2002 stalling

1. will it stay running if you foot is sligtly on the gas.
if so common problem it the IAC valve located on top of the throttle body. it controls ait into the engine when throttle is closed.
2. do you hear loud fog horn like sound or hissing. this could indicate a vaccum leak.
3. are there any performance problems while driving.

my best guess would be the IAC (idle air control) valve

Timing Belt replacement- two recomendations by mazda manual

they are good for well over 100k. If your engine is freewheeling (that is - if belt does break, no valve will hit the psiton), I would just keep driving it until it breaks or never does.
I am driving my 93 Villager until it breaks. over 150k right now, freewheeling engine.

As for cost, about $400 is my guess.

Ask your dealer service dept if it's freewheeling. check your owner manual too.
