1996 Jaguar xj6 sunroof will not close you can hear motor running, how can you manual close it?

My sunroof is stuck open and will not close but you can hear the motor running. The sunroof would work perfect in Vent mode, but in the weeks prior to becoming stuck open, when sunroof/moonroof was open it would only close so far and then EXTREMELY slow until it closed and sealed. How can I close it, when I accessed the sunroof motor to use ratchet the gears were stripped.

Remove the overhead garage door and sunglass panel. The sunroof motor can be turned by a screwdriver if I remember correctly. But this may not help because you said you can hear the motor running.
If this link doesn't work you can copy and paste it in your browser.

Good luck.

If you remove any gear that is coupling it to the motor you should be able to slide it back to where you want. I would put gear back just to hold it in place and keep it from moving. But you do have to replace that gearbox for future operation.

SOURCE: sunroof will not close

If the motor is stuck, you can probably hold the switch to the forward position, and smack the roof. This may allow the motor to start working. I don't think there is any way to do it manually.

The sunroof motor is accessable from the trunk. A winder handle for emergency use was provided when the car was new but you can use another tool to do the job. Take off the rear bulkhead panel and the motor will be visable and you will see the shaft to turn the sunroof manually. Good luck!

Sunroof not closing

You must dismount the sunroof glass, and then run the open an close operation until the cables are lined up. You will know when. Then install the glass back. Hopefully the plastic track is not broken.

My sunroof switch seems to be broken and i am missing the hand crank for the motor, how can I get the sunroof to close?

First things first, check for blown fuse, is there power @ the switch, if so I would just pull switch use jumper wire to close sunroof and go buy new switch. But with these ole Cats there is more likely a lack of ground or lack of power at the switch. If you DO have pwr. @ the switch and @ the motor THEN check ground @ motor. Good ground? Replace motor, find a hand crank or ...

Sounds like sunroof is stuck, motor can't overcome load. Cheap test: car off, interior light turned on try to move sunroof, does light dim? If yes motor is trying to move but can't. If light does not dim then motor not getting power.

Manual close for sunroof

You can try cleaning and lubricating the runners. The sunroof will open as soon as it is obstructed, eg. A childs arm in the way of closing. The problem here is that you can hear the motor running, wich indicates a broken cable, or a stripped plastic gear.

Jaguar xj6 sport 1994

Sunroof console (where the map lights are located) has a black screw you can turn with a coin. Located just beyond the map lights. Turn 1/4 turn and that panel releases. There is a manual handle that is snapped into the console towards the back left. It is not that big. It is black and "T" shaped. Insert that handle into the motor which is located directly beneath the panel. It is brass colored most likely. about the size of a deck of cards. The handle tip inserts there. Turn handle until stops and pull down to disengage the motor. You should then be able to operate the crank. I had same problem. Had a tough time closing roof. Works intermittently. Don't know if it is the motor or switch. I think motor as I hear mine trying to engage but it is no longer moving the roof panel. Good luck.

These instructions are contained in the manual.
