On my 2005 Tacoma with the 4.0L V6, I found it easier to change the belt from under the truck. Just remove the skid pan. Plenty of room to install the belt. The tensioner pulley is the one at about 2-o'clock from the crankshaft with the belt nearly all the way around it.

This is true, it's much easier to change it from under the truck.. Route the belt around all of the sheaves except the A/C compressor, then pull down the tensioner and slip the belt onto the compressor sheave. My truck is an 05 Tacoma with the 4.0 as well. I think it's next to impossible to do it from the top by yourself.

Thanks much for this advice. I also have a 2005 Tacoma, and my ol' man helped me navigate the forest of pulleys to get the new one on. It did get done primarily from the bottom, but I helped to loop under and over some pulleys from the top. You'll find it easier to take off that big aircleaner plastic cap with the V-6 logo to help you see from the top. Also check out the service manual page on the customtacos website here: http://www.customtacos.com/tech.old/file...

Here is your Solution!
You will need to Locate the Belt Tensioner. It has a Large Pulley on a Bracket that Has a Bolt in the Middle and a Smaller Pulley that Goes Under the Belt and Holds Tension on it. You will need to get a Wratchet, Socket, and Cheater Bar. Turn the Bolt On the Top Large Pulley with the Wratchet and Cheater Bar. This will Lower the Smaller Pulley So that you will be Able to Remove the Belt. Please Rate My Response! Thanks! P.S. the link below is for the Belt Routing Diagram.

Do not forget to check/replace the idlers too. I also highly recommend a Goodyear Gatorback belt as a replacement. Better than OEM IMO.

Serpentine belt rubbing

It sounds like a seized or a seizing pulley. Did you replace the tensioner pulley along with the belt? Replacing the two at the same time is SOP. The tensioner is the only unit in contact with the smooth side of the belt.

Trying to replace all 3 belts on 3.4 96 tacoma

Looks like all three are serpentine belts, so the other two are probably idler tensioner pulleys you move aside. I would say the idlers are spring-loaded.

Installing new Serpentine belt

To make a tough task much easier, go to any decent auto parts store and ask to rent a serpentine belt wrench... they come with multiple sockets and crow foot wrenches and have a long bar to give you leverage against that tensioner spring. You hook the wrench onto the tensioner, and it is much easier to deal with.

I don't know for sure on your Tacoma, but most vehicles have a pin hole that once you pull the tensioner back, you can slip an allen wrench or similar sized thing into to "lock" the tensioner back so you can tussle with getting the belt through all its pulleys. Once the belt is in place, you use the wrench to relieve the pressure on the "pin", remove it, and ease the tensioner into place... don't let go!

It is probably the tensioner pulley that's gone bad. It can be replaced separately, if you can purchase the pulley separately. As to how to go about changing it in such a small space, it's definitely possible, with the right type of tools. That's why mechanics have so many different shapes and lengths of the same size tools.

Replaciing serpentine belt on 2006 Toyota Corolla

You'll have to remove the engine cover under the bottom so you can position the new belt on the pulleys properly. Get a wrench or tensioner tool and turn the tensioner clockwise to relax the drive belt. Don't apply excessive force.

It's hard to draw a picture with words, but looking at the engine from the passenger side of the car, there are basically two top pulleys, two middle, and two bottom. The drive belt goes around the outside of the two top and two bottom, and on the inside of the two middle.
