Ticking noise My 1999 1500 sierra truck has a loud ticking noise when i 1st start it for the day. once it warms up it goes away no matter how many times i start it. especially when it is really cold it's louder than usual.

The TPS would be what I would do had that problem once myself solved the problem. as for the ticking noise sounds like a lifter is bleeding down as long as the noise goes away you will be ok. But may I suggest that if you are going to keep the vehicle for awhile longer you might want to have a set of lifters put in it.

The ticking noise could be a faulty hydrulic valve lifter. When last was the oil & filter changed, it coul be that the oil is thick and not going through to the lifters and when it warms up the oil is thin. It could be that the engine is need of an overhaul as 148.000 miles is 238.182 Kilometers and that is a hi milage.

yes chevys 3.4 and 3.5 have common lifter noise, have you checked the oil level. I would a better oil ,and I put lucas oil treat in my customers cars after oil changes

does sound like lifters to me which most can be adjusted

it may need a lifter or valve adjustment when cold they will tick or knock depending on how loose or worn out then when it warms up they swell with heast and noise stops. after adjusting or replacing it will stop making noise

Usually a ticking from the engine is caused by oil not coating the tappets. Tappets are the rods that control the intake and exhaust valves. Once the engine warms up oil is circulated to those parts and the ticking stops.

I would have you oil pressure checked. The oil pump or bearings could be going out. The lifter noise on this car usually will go away faster then 5 minutes. I think the noise is lasting a little to long.

how is the oil level and pressure?, how many miles on engine? is this a loud knock or rather a clatter/ticking noise? knock is engine rod or crankshaft bearings, clatter loud ticking is valve follower noise. how long before it (the noise) goes away?

Coolant that goes down, but is not leaking visibly (check for puddles after parking), is probably a head gasket problem. Have u been checking the oil level? Is it going up, or not using as much as before? This is usually an indication of a bad head gasket, which allows the coolant to leak into the oil. The ticking noise can actually be the head gasket also. As the vehicle warms up, things expand, and any leak in the head gasket will close up and the ticking noise will not be noticeable. As time goes on, the 'ticking' will last longer, and get worse. Have u noticed if this ticking is lasting longer than when u 1st heard it? Let me know how u make out. countrycurt0
