Driving to work this morning , the check engine light comes on and the jeep starts running sluggish. After work I head to the auto parts store to see what codes are pulled. The guy shows me the monitor on the reader, and there are codes for left and right front abs, trans slipping codes, and codes for the ecu. The guy tells me he would be most concerned with the ecu codes and says the ecu will sometimes throw out an "idiot set of codes". Can anyone please shed some light on this for me?
If the ecu has trouble codes for itself, it may be an internal problem, and the "idiot codes" would be a symptom of erratic ecu operation.
I would recommend that you take it to the dealer and pay the diagnostic fees to have it properly assessed. Then you will know for sure what the problem is with your jeep, and can go from there. If a new ecu is needed, check for a remanufactured unit or shop around at local salvage yards, if you don't want to pay the cost of a brand new unit.
Would the erratic ecu operation cause drivability issues? Such as a hard shift at low speed, or a jump in rpm in mid gear?
Sounds like a real code for transmission problem, and may be electrical in nature, such as the electronic shift points. A good diagnosis would cover all the possibilities, and would include the transmission computer, if equipped.

I would start with the ignition switch. Since it is intermittant it will be hard to tell if it is the problem. Un less you take the switch apart. Which I tear everything apart to make sure. And depending on the complexidy I repair them. Again this is just a shot in the dark.
Let me know
