Open the trunk, behind the light you will see a plastic wing nut, remove it.
Then pull the carpeted trunk liner away and you will find 2 more plastic wing nuts. remove both of them and the wireing harness. the lamp will now com off the back of the car. twist the bulb base out and replace with new bulb.

Get the left signal to flash fast then walk around the car to see which light isn't flashing then change the bulb or socket if they all appear to be flashing (front and rear) turn on the right turn signal then look into the front and rear lens and count the number of bulbs flashing, now do the same thing on the left. Many times there's more than 1 bulb in each lamp. I hope this helps. Take care.

1998 Lincoln Town Car: No turn signals, 4 way flash, brake lights

If only your brake light in middle of rear window works then your other bulbs are bad. If brake lights all work in the back than bulbs are good. If you put turn signal on right or left and the bulbs light in front and back then you need to change multifunction light control box under dash. My understanding is it cost $600 new. So I would try used.

Check your TURN SIGNAL BULBS. My was doing the same thing, turned out the right rear signal bulb was shot. Change BOTH sides when you change one. Two bulbs come in a pack.
