1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport Ignition Lights Come on but wont crank
I have a 1998 Jeep cherokee sport when I turn the key the auxiliary comes on but the engine wont crank, nothing no noise but the auxillary does come on. Brand new battery and starter. Any ideas?
I have this same problem with my 1998 Jeep grand cherokee 5.9 V8. It only happens sometimes though. I put it into neutral and it starts right up. Is this the neutral safety switch or something eles. Try putting the car in neutral and starting. If its a manual trans it might be the clutch pedal safety switch or it may be something as simple as a loose battery connection.

Most likely is intermittent in starter solenoid relay
Next most likely is key switch start connection intermittent. a tester will have to be used to find where the power is being lost from the start terminal of ignition switch to starter solenoid pilot connection to the main starter output power from solenoid to starter main contactor.
You had to put pressure on the key like you are attempting to turn it and then tap on ignition rite next to the key. It will jar the tumblers back into place and turn
Figures...I'd use 2&3 as b&c Open reading means that with the meter set to ohms and turned on, the meter should read the same connected to the terminals as it did before you connected it.
Crank or cam sensor probably as plugs bad plugs would start but miss the sensor will either give a start or no start condition and on 1 truck the crank sensor went out and it would run cold but miss like crazy when warm,I work in a chyrsler shop and have never seen that happen and even a scan tool didn't pick it up.
I HAD the same problem with 95 Cherokee for over a month, Turned out all I needed to do was Clean Battery Terms and Replace the Ground Clamp on Batt Cable.
Try this first. With one of you under the car whack the starter with a hammer as the other of you turns the key t the start position and holds it there. No wimpy whacks here give it one or two good ones. If it is a bad starter it may start this way. If it does, a new starter motor is in your future. Very easy to change on a Jeep. If it doesn't work let me know and we will go further.
