I have a 1997 Ford Thunderbird. I recently was told by a driver behind me my taillights are on but no brake lights when stepped on. I figured ok easy fix swap bulbs. I did both brake bulbs no change. I swapped the brake light switch under the dash and nothing still have running lights but no brake lights when stepped on pedal. I checked wires and then sockets all good connections tight. I did notice that my hazards are not working. I know that before the hazards only flashed on the right side not the left. I know I have to push the hazard button down/in to be able to have my turn signals work as if I leave it up/out no turn signals. I can not remember if pushed down and in is hazards on or off but either way no flashing hazards but pushed down my turn signals will work but not hazards. The key also has to be forward in accessory or engine running to get turn signals to work, I have not changed the flasher bulb is this the same as hazard bulb? Any ideas.
Brake bulbs and tail light bulbs are to different bulbs. tail light bulbs are rated at 5 watts while stop lights are rated at 21 watt. So what you have done would not have indicated where the faults was. Firstly check for a stop circuit fuse. Next by using a test light check the power at the brake switch firstly on side and then the other making sure the ignition is in the on position. If you have power at both terminals then check for a rustey / corroded connector in the wiring possible in the floor pan under the mat. a lot of harnesses were placed under the trim under the door over the sil and were prone to penetration by the screws that held it in place. Check for a good earth for the stop light bulbs as any rust will not allow them to work. As for the turn light problem it might be that if you have a return earth problem then operating lights will earth out through other lights and stop them from working
Not in most cars including this one. On this car I have running lights across the trunk lid and in each corner. You open the trunck the middle bar of running lights goes up with the trunk and each corner has running, brake, and turn signals. It is a single bulb. The running light stay solid whenturned on but also flash brighter when turn signal on. SAME BULB HAS A SECOND FILAMENT THAT IS FOR THE BRAKE LIGHTS. iT SATYS OFF UNLESS BRAKE IS APPLIED.Sorry about caps to lazy to retype all that on my tablet.

Lets start at the beginning.
The turn signals and brake lights use different fuses but both go thru the turn signal switch and use the same bulbs.
Have you checked the fuses for each circuit and does each switch have power in and out ?
The bulb for the brake light is the same bulb for running and turn signal. These are in the corner of back of the car There is also a brakke light in the spoiler. The the brake lights never come on the running lights come on as should and as long as the hazard button is pushed in I can use my turn signals with no issues. I made sure the bulbs got changed just in case even though by viewing a filemant might have broken in either but I kinda figured after looking at them this want the issue as the third brake light wasnt coming on. I havent run a volt meter in the sockets yet as I have to borrow one but running lights seems nice and bright as well as turn signals.I did check all fuses in the fuse box none blown all nice and clear . Manual points out brake light fuse in box and then the turn/hazard is a fuse relay bolted in instrument panel. I Used a simple power tester ie 2 clips with the little bulb that lights on the new brake switch I put in and when pedal gets depressed it lights showing power there. I just went and got a new turn signal/hazard combo 3 prong relay from adfvanced auto but it was an opened package last one in stock so said if no good bring back, I yanked the old one pooped the new one in and then got nothing. Even when I pushed the hazard button in with key forward nothing. I put the original back in and was able to use turn signals when hazard button was pushed down as if hazards were to be on which they dont come on.I am guessing someone returned the fuse relay after they burnt it so will have to wait til morning to get another one and see as Im thinking this is part the issue since the new one did absolutly nothing. I have checked connections at switch, bulb, relay, and fuse box all seem clean tight and no frayed crushed wires. I will look under the seat tomarrow as I think the taillight wires have a pig tail connector under there as it is not under the door sill panel as other responder suggested.Im thinking if the relay fuse I try next doesnt cure it and Im obviously getting power to the bulb socket since the same bulb for the brakes is the working running/turn signal then only thing left is the multi use switch ie the turn signal switch with integrated hazard button but I dont know why they would include the brakes in that unless it just routes power through it...So yes fuses all good, bulbs new, power to sockets for bulbs, good connections so far, new brake light switch, and gonna get another new relay tomarrow.

Can you just check to make sure the ignition key switch is not staying over to far and not backing off when you try to start it. I had a truck that did that and it messed up my turn signals until I brought the key switch back a little after starting it. Just a simple idea. Be kind with your rating for me. Raz

Ok Changed the flasher/hazard relay and no change. I got hold of a volt meter and what I found was when I put the tips in the fuse slot for the stop hazard there was low voltage coming out from the fuse to the wires on back. Soooo I dropped the fuse box and sure enough the wire hand partially pulled somehow from the fuse open connection so I cleaned it to make sure good contact reseated it nice and tight then popped the fuse back in and bingo hazards and brake lights back to working. Thanks for the ideas.
