Overheating problems in a 2006 Pontiac Torrent

Heater runs cold idling or standing; fan runs after shut down; wife complained of overheating; serviceman said it needed water: could it be the themostrate or fan? 42,000 miles

I just went through the same thing with my 2008 Torrent. To make a long story short, I was having issues with not getting heat in the cabin, overheating, and sometimes a loss of coolant. I tried replacing the thermostat, replacing the water pump, and flushing the heater core. All helped temporarily, but the problems kept coming back. My fear was that it was a leak in the head gasket, but was having a hard time definitively diagnosing that. I ended up getting a combustion leak test kit, which cost about $50. They are very easy to use - just follow the instructions. The test confirmed that there were combustion gasses in the coolant, which indicated a leak in the head gasket. It cost about $1,500 to repair, but at least the problems are done now. I would suggest getting one of those kits before putting money into other repairs.

Another possible cause is your coolant sensor. if the sensor goes bad, it will drip coolant but won't notice it because it just seeps down the engine components. Most people don't even realize that there is such a sensor. it will send a faulty reading that its overheating when the coolant level is fine and when enough coolant does seep out it will still say its overheating because it is at that point. I would definitely look into checking your coolant sensor as the cause since it's so hard to even see that it is leaking and its super easy to take out and replace. hope that helps if you're still having problems

Hi w31kn1, my 2006 Pontiac torrent its overheating as well, did you ever found the problem?, in my case both of the fans are working properly, I have replaced the thermostat and water pump, but the problem its coming back again, the fluids levels are ok.
On other forums Ive read about a gasket issue that makes the coolant to leak inside the cylinder chamber, here Lady_Chaos says about a bad coolant sensor, others says about bad headers.
It has 80,000 miles on it.

There could be a damaged or blocked water inlet. It can be quite simple. Call a buddy who's a car fanatic and strip out the fan and rad. Search for gunge. Clear it out, wash it down with safe detergent. Simple soap wash. Try it!

How do you know the thermostat is ok? If in doubt replace it. Water pumps are a even bigger what if. Did he do a radiator flush? Cooling system flush of the engine? Cooling fans come on at what temp and go off when? Replace the engine temperature sensor? 6 years old is bound to have sensors and such go bad.

SOURCE: 1999 Pontiac Grand Am Overheating

It is probably the problem. To make shure that need to change the gaskets, one of the symptoms use to be thet the temp rises when you are running at speed 50+ average, where is supposed that the car gets a lot of air due by the speed and nobody thinks that will be overheated.
