Have a 1996 ford explorer and it will sit and idle fine without overheating but when you start driving it starts overheating any suggestions about what could be causing this
Most common cause is a internally plugged radiator.
The water and coolant often react negatively to the metals and rubber inside the passageways to clog the radiator over time. If you wish to try to "reverse flush " it yourself, ask "fixya".
Other causes may be: Stuck thermostat, plugged fins of radiator outside, water pump slipping or starting to fail by "freezing up",
loose or slipping serpentine belt, and problem with the engine cooling fan.

sounds like a vacuum intake leak..check a those little tubes for cracks and security. also check your transmission levels, this will sometimes cause a surging problem while driving..if all this checks good then it might be dirty or clogged injectors..purchase a can of Sea Foam from Autozone $10 pour in 1/2 can to half tank of gas and drive around for thirty minutes..highway driving preferred, and see if that will clean up the fuel system. Can i get some feedback, thanks

Do you have a check engine light on? First thing I would do is unplug the IAC motor when the engine is warm. If the idle speed doesn't change you have a vacuum leak or a bad IAC motor. If the idle speed goes down you might have a bad TPS or IAC

thank you for the reply i was mistaken though it overheats both going down the road and idling does that make a difference in what could be wrong with it?
Only in the severity of the problem. When does it overheat exactly?
when first start it and let it sit and idle it does not overheat but once start driving it down the road it starts overheating and if pull over and just let it idle it is still overheating
when you first start it you can let it sit forever and it will not overheat but once you drive it, it starts overheating and continues overheating even while idling
I can't sadvise further without more information, but, if you're still looking for advise, you might ask more Ford Explorer owners.
thanks for your input it was the thermostat i put a new one in and haven't had any more problems
