Obd 2 connector does not work with any code scanner

I have a 2004 tahoe, runs fine but check engine light came on, and when I hook up to pull codes no scanner will communcate with the truck.....Ive tryed snap-on,auto xray, mac, and the cheapy at auto zone. all say to check the connection or turn ing switch on? ive chased the 4 wires all the way to the firewall then I loose them in the harness, the connector is good.... and I cant find a schematic for the truck anywere. Im a heavy equipment mech and have tryed all I can including pulled the computer and cleaned all connections, checked and cleaned all fuses and harnesses under fuse panels, found no problems.even ran the wiggle test on my auto xray 6000 manualy and shook every dahm wire under the dash and hood? im stumped any help would be great. thanks

jonny5846, thanks. I had a car alarm installed and they tapt into the orange wire with a spade splice under the hood fuse box, it cut thru the orange wire and I was not getting full voltage at the connector, since I had the batt disconnected it shut the light off, so I will hook up my scanner and drive to see what codes pop up when the light comes back on. but I am communcating now so thanks again

looks pretty cut and dry , looking at a schematic , pin 16 on aldl goes to cigar fuse under hood fuse block (orange wire) , 99% of the time blown when i don't have communication ... pin 4 = ground (black wire). pin 5 = goes thru a i/p relay block then to ground (black/white wire) , and pin 2 = to a # 205 splice , dataline , left side of dash (purple) . so thats all i see in schematics , hot , ground and data . let me know which 1 is/was the problem .

HI there....Check to see if the code reader is a CAN OBD 2 code reader. If it is only OBD2 , that may be the problem. In 2003 Some vehicle manufacturers ( ford,Gm,Mazda and Saab) began using a new computer protocol called Controller Area Network (CAN) with the OBD2 and if your vehicle is CAN OBD 2 the simple OBD2 code reader will not work.Contact your local dealer to determine if you vehicle is CAN or not or find a code reader that is CAN OBD2 capable. Hope this helps you out

My Obd connector does not work with a code scanner. I have a 2000 pontiac Montana

You must verify that you have 12 volts + present at pin #16 of the connector, see diagram below, if no voltage check owners manual for fuse location.

"Check engine" light while everything runs fine

That truck had and OBDII connector under the dash on the driver side . The only was to retrieve the code is with a scanner some parts stores have a small code code tool . You said that their are no Mechanics so you may not have parts stores. You can buy cheap OBD-2 code reads of the web ... they are universal for all cars newer then 1997 if you get one of these and pull the codes and come back to this site i can tell what the codes mean so we can diagnois you engine light .

I need to know how to pull the codes on my 99 Intrepid..I lost the manual that had the instructions.

After 1996, a scanner is required to get check engine light codes. Hooked up to your OBD-2 data connector.

CAN/OBD-code reader will not read my 2004 chevy tahoe why not ?

You can check to see if you blew the cigarette lighter fuse by checking in the fuse box under the hood on the driver side. The fuse will be in the bottom right hand corner of the fuse box towards the windshield. If it lights up when test, the fuse is ok. What I found out on my '04 Tahoe was that in '03 GMC started making the CAN (Controller Area Network) which will not be compatible with plain OBD 2 Scanners & seem as though something is either wrong with the machine or car connector port. Believe me, I've taken my Tahoe to several auto parts store & even a few garages to be disappointed & not have my diagnosis done. Be sure that the OBD 2 Scanner you have, says "CAN" on it, or that it is "CAN" compatible & this will solve your issue.

I've hooked up 2 different scan tools to my 04 tahoe and both times it didn't read anything. The check engine light is on and there is also a rattling noise from the cat.

If you have a catalytic converter is rattling it can be replaced for free if you have under 80k.Same with the PCM.They are both covered for 8 years 80k miles. If the check engine light is on it should show the codes. The only thing is not all scanners work. Also there was a bulletin for some G.M. vehicles that had to be reprogrammed for after market scanners to work on them.

HOW DO YOU CLEAR THE YELLOW ENGINE LIGHT ON THE DASH

well first you must repair the problem that caused it to come on, u will have a trouble code stored, once the repair is completed the light will need to be cleared/turned off with a OBD 2 scanner.

I have a 1995 olds 88 that is pre OBD2 but it has the OBD2 connector. It will not allow me to retrive codes???

The 1995 Olds 88 has an obd 2 plug, but is an obd 1 system. Some people call it obd 1.5
There is no option to jump 2 contacts to flash the codes on the check engine light in these cars.
You will either need a compatible scan tool, or a cable to hook to a laptop and the software to pull the codes. (check out www.aldlcable.com)
One such scan tool is the Actron CP9185. It has the extra data pin for the 8192 baud communication with the computer in these cars. (pin 9 on the OBD 2 connector)

Service engine soon light is on all the time

Take your car to shop and have them hook a scanner to your computer. Your computer in your vehicle has senses a problem and will not go off until it is cleared. You can buy a generic OBD !! scanner for a hundred dollars and pull the codes yourself if you are mechanically inclined. they are a simple plug in scanner. Auto parts stores may pull the codes for you too.

04 tahoe check engine light on,tried to check with scanner, but no power to obd2 connector.

Check all the fuses with a 12 volt test light. Also does the cigar lighter work many times the same fuse that is for the cigar lighter also powers up the obd 2 connector.
