Jeep trouble code 320 and 743

Will be driving and motor will cut off. Try to crank but it just cranks no fire up until i used jumper cables. The lights will still be on but flicker a little. I fired it up unhooked the battery and it idle fine besides voltage gauge moved up and down some. This has happened several times finally replaced fuel pump relay and CSP sensor it ran fine for a day and did it again. Any suggestions ? and will the 743 code shut the motor off ? it says its a trans code . Thanks

One problem at a time please. Let's get the engine running All the time! First, it seems that the battery is weak, perhaps old and past its prime (thus the jumper cables worked). Or, maybe you just need to clean off the battery terminals on the battery and the connecting cables. When did you replace the plugs, wiring harness, distributor cap and rotor last? Perhaps just cleaning them up will do the trick. Also, check that the grounding cables all over the engine compartment are clean and tight.

I just got back getting a new battery and plugs. So you think I should change the cap also? I have only changed the plugs about 6 years ago and the battery was 6 years old also with some corrosion. I have never changed to cap or rotor is it hard to do ?Thanks

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2013

Not difficult, but necessary! You need to do regular maintenance on your vehicle. Six years is way too long...yearly is recommended...check the owner's manual.

2001 4.0l i know it has a coil pack but cant seem to find cap and rotor

  • Anonymous Jan 13, 2013

think it has no cap coil pack sets directly on top of plugs

  • Anonymous Jan 14, 2013

Individual high voltage coils on each spark plug..nice! Now back to business...have you tried to reseat EVERY fuse and relay in the fuse boxes? There are 2; one under the dash on the driver's side (I believe) and the big one under the hood.

Check the crank position sensor. I had the same problem in a 1989 cherokee 4.0, and the solution was simply to acomodate the sensor wiring. No replace was necesary

I just had this problem and replaced the camshaft sensor, crankshaft sensor, and coolant temp sensor. i replaced these items because of high mileage. try these but first check your relays located under the hood on the passenger side. sometimes they get hot and fail.

SOURCE: 2007 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Crank-No Start. Replaced FP.

Hey Tim take a look at this, will this help ?
SUBJECT:
No Engine Crank Or No Engine Start Due To Electronic Lockup Of The WCM / SKREEM
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves the replacement of the Wireless Control Module (WCM), and if
equipped, the replacement of the Electric Steering Column Lock (ELV). The WCM is also
referred to as the Sentry Key Remote Entry Module (SKREEM).
MODELS:
2007
SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer will experience a no engine crank AND a no engine start condition. Also, the
remote keyless entry (RKE) system will not operate. This condition may be due to an
electrostatic discharge (ESD) from the ignition key into the Wireless Control Module
(WCM), causing the WCM to electronically lockup. This condition may occur more
frequently in dry and/or cold weather conditions where a sufficient electrostatic charge is
more easily produced. This condition is corrected by the replacement of the WCM
DIAGNOSIS:
1. With the condition present (i.e. the vehicle in the no crank / no start condition), connect
the StarSCAN® scan tool to the vehicle.
2. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position, and power up the StarSCAN®.
3. If the WCM is electronically locked up, the StarSCAN® will display the WCM as being
“off bus”.
4. If the no crank / no start condition is present, and the WCM is “off bus”, then reset the
WCM by temporarily removing the IOD fuse (with the key out of the ignition switch),
wait for 10 seconds and then reinstall the IOD fuse.
5. With the IOD fuse reset having been performed, verify that the vehicle will now crank,
start, and run.
6. If the condition is temporarily corrected by performing the above steps, and if the part
number of the WCM is earlier than the part number of the WCM listed in the part
reference table in the Service Bulletin Parts Required Section below, then perform the
Repair Procedure.

SOURCE: 1991 Jeep Fuel Control Issue

Hey Mudkicker,

Who ever thought of putting an electric fuel pump inside a tank of gas........

Check your other gauges for accuracy. They do that when a ground is loose.

Check the wiring from the fuel tank along the longitudinal frame for frays and shorts. Plugs are secured.

Under the hood, passenger side, check the fuel pump relay. Switch it with one of the others to test it.

Bring the vehicle to an auto parts store. Ask them to break out he code reader. Check for diag codes

I was driving yesterday and I don't know where my car just stopped and does not want to turn on at first I said it hesitating when I turn the key over but now it doesn't do nothing what I want to know is...

Typically the only time that the fuel pump loses power is in the result of an accident to prevent a fire. If your car just died and would not turn over today sounds like you may have had your alternator go out; therefore running on your battery until it is drained. No warning lights on the dash or did you notice the ammeter guage discharging by chance?

2000 jeep grand cherokee 4.7 has a no crank no start on cold mornings

DOES IT CRANK in NEUTRAL? using fresh PRNDL contacts?
no crank, is easy to diagnose. with just one tool a voltmeter.
12.6vdc is a charged battery , rested, if lower, and not cold its discharged. so charge it or jumper cable crank engine off running donor car. easy huh?
if it cant crank it cant start, (mine can push start or gravity start)
battery cable lugs clean and tight x4 ends? green corrosion?

we then hot wire. the starter solenoid, next. (using old screwdriver as jumper bar)
it cranks now (good starter ) all in 5min work !
it does not crank bad starter.

so it cranks hot wired. good.
so next what is next, easy the KEY line.
the key line runs form the starter to the PRNDL switch and then the KEY switch (crank Start line)
if the car has SKIM immobilizer it cuts fuel not spark.

so i check for 12vdc into PRNDL cranking then key is ok.
if got 12vdc in to PRNLD but not out cranking the switch is bad.
or maladjusted?
its that simple ,with any 10buck DMM off walfarts shelf.

if car is hacked or alarms spliced in, we cant fix it here, its not stock.
same with remote start hack jobs.

Getting gas and fire but just turnes over like there is no fire at all

which engine, they work different.
you saw gas where.?
you saw fuel where??
you saw something turn, what?
try this.
it cranks robustly (250RPM = robust)?
the engines cranks over, (i see pulley spin fast on crank)?
the engine fails to start and to RUN (sustained).?
you lost spark to 4 or 6 clingers, all are dead spark?
so you place the diagnostic jumper wire and crank for
5seconds
and release the key,
got DTC error codes, bingo.
if not bad spark is bad coil or bad ignitor that drives said coil.

next is fueling but above is all first.
fuel is always LAST. (ECU cuts fuel for many reasons) ask.

ever clean the battery lugs this decade?
no crank, does car have A/T o r M/T tranny, not stated.
did jumper starts or known good battery (fully charged) crank motor fast (y/n)
yes, bad battery
no, bad cranking system. (its a system not 1 part)

cranking dead.
i hot wire the starter, soleniod.
motor cranks but dont start (cuz keys are in my pocket for safety)
no crank is bad starter or bad battery cables
cranks fast. starter and crank shaft on engine spins normal
cause,bad key line.

post results. we can work a bad key line, after post tranny type.
the above cuts the problem in1/2.
1: bad cranking system.
2: bad key line.

if battery is just discharged, its a bad battery or bad charging system.
owning a charger solve this as is using a voltmeter on battery after a good start.

2000 olds 3.5 Dohc. Changed fuel filter checked fuel pressure @40 lbs resting cranking 45 lbs When i try and start it in the morning indoors won't fire crank the key to acc then on then back to acc then...

Which is the problem, no fire, or no crank. No fire means to spark to engine, but engine turns over fine. No crank means engine won't turn over when key is turned. I'm assuming engine will not turn over. Three most common problems. 1. Weak battery (get tested at auto parts store). Will hold charge for short time once started, but loses it when sits overnight. 2. Bad starter. Possible but not likely, still not out of the question. 3. Bad battery cables. This is an easy test. Take a pair of jumper cables and bypass the battery cables by connecting black side of jumper cable to "-" of battery and block of engine, and red of jumper cables to "+" of battery and (tap) Battery terminal post on starter...engine should turn over. Ensure you take all safety precautions to prevent car from moving during this procedure. Best of luck resolving this problem.

ditto and say first if stater works at all cranking word.

wild guess car is not cranking

the starter can jumper wired cranked too key off
to simply test the starter I just saved you $100 and skinned up knuckles.
fuses good too.
yes I have the shop manual on jeeps

After I drive my jeep some, if it is somewhat warm or not cold weather, my jeep has a hard time starting. It may crank but run a little ways and cut off going down the road.I have had the coil, plugs, plug...

if it shuts off after running for a while and will not restart for about 10 min,a bad crank sensor will cause this. abad crank sensor will make car shut off and not restart for about 10 min. put a scanner on to make sure. a check engine light does not allways come on. if you do not have a scanner, any auto parts store will scan it for free.
