Not in common. But a blown head gasket is more than likely the problem. If when you have the radiator cap of and car running water keeps trying to go down, will come up accationally water pump is working. If it consistently blows out with lots of steam blown head gasket

Engine overheating? Try this procedure:
Probably head gasket... not a hard fix... can have a compression check to make sure.
SOURCE: I have a 1997 Saturn SL2. I have no heat. We
It is your heater core, there is nothing else left.
The heater housing is usually under the dash, and it must be removed to gain access to the heater core.Procedures for removing a dash, and heater core vary. But for the core:
The heater housing must be removed, and then you
"remove the panels" or "split the case" (Usually screwed together.)
Remove the coolant hoses, the cable and vacuum control line.
Remove the heater core bracket and clamps.
To install the new heater core, reverse the removal steps.
Core leaks **** because of the core's
location deep within the firewall/ dashboard of the car.
So remember to liquid test your new one before you put it back in, or you could be sorry.

pull the spark plugs and look down into the cylinders with a small bright flashlight, if the top of any piston is nice and clean and shiny and the others are not, you have a head gasket leak on that cylinder, it will be very obvious it will look like a brand new piston and the others will have carbon built up and deposits otherwise is your fan operating at all? do you have any heat from the heater? after the car is fully warmed up does the lower radiator hose get hot? please look into these things and get back to me i have seen on these cars many times the fan control circuit fails and the fans do not come on. You can run a ground wire to the fan relay under the hood and put a switch in the car to manually run the fans when it gets hot, i can explain how to do this if your fans are not operating please rate -jeff

Maybe the heater core is plugged or perhaps you have an air pocket in the cooling system. Try and bleed the cooling system once more.
SOURCE: no heat replaced thermostat water pump and
when you changed the therm you let air into the system and it will usually cause a air bubble in the heater core you probally should try to burp the system there is usually a plug or a relief valve check with your dealer fro instructions on how to burp the air out of the system try that first befor4e trying to replace the heater core
SOURCE: no heat , replaced radiator , water pump, rad. cap
it may be either the electric heater box(in the dash), or a a bad heater core. have you looked into these? the cooling system won't usually cause you to not have heat. in some cars there is an assembly inside the dash that actually helps heat the air in some cars and just redirects the air through the vents, panel, or the floor in others most cars use a heater core as part of the cooling system, after the water leaves the engine hot it travels through the heater core on its way to to the radiator to be cooled the hot water in the heater core heats the air that is pulled into the cabin allowing the vents to blow warm air. this is why the car will not blow warm air until the water in the engine has had time to warm up on a cold start.i hope this helps.
Could be a Bad radiator Cap? Low Water? Clogged radiator? Not enough air flow, Do To.... Dirty radiator fins? Bad Fan Clutch or Electric fan not running? Timing Off? Stuck closed Thermostat? Bad Water Pump? Blown head Gasket(s)? Cracked Cylinder Head(s), ECT....
