You can get to it from under the wheel arch, just loosen the plastic wheel arch liner and it will provide direct access to the rear of the lamp where the parking light bulb is located. That's on a long wheelbase grand vitara. I'm not sure if the short wheelbase one or the xl7 are the same as the light configuration is different.

well it could be a fuse for the tail lights, but can also be the bulbs,if you open the rear hatch and look on the side ot the lens there you will see two retainers, may be bolts (10mm) or plastic retainers. remove those and light pops out,
1. Locate the tail
light on the rear of your vehicle. They are located on each corner and
light up when you apply your brakes or turn signal. 2. If applicable, remove any mounting screws on the outside of the tail light.
3. Open the trunk of your vehicle and locate the back of the tail light.
4. Remove the socket and bulb from the back of the tail light by turning and pulling.
Sounds like faulty wiring. If you remove the brake lamp housing you will gain access to the brake lamp wiring. Open up the harness and look for green corrosion at wiring splices, this is usually the problem with this line of suv. Of course I have assumed you have checked the bulbs!
