The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) is located in the differential area of the transaxle. Also, to replace it should be fairly simple. I wish I could give a better answer exactly where it is at, but I have you the answer straight out of the Haynes manual.
To replace the VSS, disconnect the electrical connector from the VSS. Then remove the retaining bolt and lift the VSS from the Transaxle or simply unscrew the VSS. Installation is the reverse of removal.

This is most likely due to a poor connection from your speedometer cable to your transmission/transaxle. Often when a transmission is replaced this happens. If you have a way to identify your speedometer/transaxle connection. Locate it, if it seems to be loose remove it and aggressively clean w/proper solvent. If that is not the case then you have a faulty instument cluster and it needs to be replaced.

Yes your speedometer, and odometer are controlled by your speed sensor.
