My 2003 Freelander has 185,000 miles on it. I used to smell coolant when I had my heater on, but I don't anymore. Now the issue is this film developing on my windows when I have the heater on. The heater core is not leaking (checked by mechanic). This car isn't worth a huge repair bill, so I'm hoping it's something easy (HA!) to correct - like maybe a hose - or it's harmless and I can just live with it.
I believe the film on your window is coolant vapor. To test this go to autozone or similar and get a coolant leak detection kit. The kit contains a UV flashlight a pair of glasses and a dye you add to the radiator. Add the dye to radiator, drive vehicle normally but run heater, let film condensation on Windows. Wait until dark and put on the glasses. Shine light on the Windows that have film if the window glows then the film is antifreeze vapor and not safe to breathe.

My coolant leaked out and on top there is a large hard plastic container, I had to replace it, that stopped my coolant leak.

You have an air leak in your coolant pipes under the dash.
There is air in the system.
When the engine is off the coolant is dripping onto the carpet.

With problems like this the only sure way is to go to a workshop and get them to pressure test the cooling system, that is if you dont have a pressure tester yourself. Then it should be seen where you are losing coolant. It may leak from any where, hoses, loose clips, even the filler cap. Is there any sign of antifreeze that has dried
hope this helps

sounds to me like you have a blocked heater matrix or coolant radiator

I have experienced a few radiators on both discoveries and series 2 range rovers being blocked causing overheating. Also might pay to check your fan hub when the engine is hot switch off and check how freely you can turn the fan
