Most fans in vehicles have phospher bronze bushes as bearings for the motor. These become dry and make a noise as described with thr motor eventually stopping. removal of the unit to replace or lubricate the bushes are the only answers. when you have done this check the fuse as it will probably have blown to protect the fan motor

SOURCE: the air conditioner switches off

If you are positive it is full, then I would have someone check the pressure switch on the evaporator. When the system pressure drops, it will shut off the system. Usually people think the system does not work when I buy a car, and 9 out of 10 times it is just not fully charged. I wish you luck and have a great day.

SOURCE: I got a 1996 subaru impreza 2.2. The thing started

If the Coolant is being pushed back out, I would suspect a head gasket. Sorry to tell you that but at least its a Subaru and they built the car better than anyone else. Not a real hard job and parts are less expensive than others. First I would do a compression check to find which head is leaking. Sometimes when you pull a plug it will have water on it. If it is not a bad leak it will just loose coolant and heat up. I wish you luck and have a good day.

My 1997 subaru impreza squeals badly and then engine smokes

Hi this sounds weird does the smoke come out from the front engine covers? the squealing could be the cambelt trying to turn a semi or completly ceased waterpump which would cause the smoke after a while, also without the waterpump working properly the engine will leak water and anti freeze out the overflow and overheat really quickly

The heater blows cold air, coolant is full.

Check and/or replace your thermostat. If that doesn't work most likely you going to need a new heater core.

In my 2004 wrx, the air conditioner will sometimes not blow cold air, does it mainly on hot days. its as if the compresser stops spinning on its own. the compresser was already siezed up and was replaced...

check the coolant pressure on the LOW pressure service port (where you put freon in). it sounds like your a/c was overcharged, and if so, you probably need another new compressor AND a new condensor. they sell gauges for checking this at autozone for 10-20 bucks each.......
