On inspection, the initial fault was with the crankshaft sensor, but this has been replaced and the air gap cleaned too, but it still happens, this is on a Hyundai Coupe SE, 2003 registration. In the drop down menu, it wouldn't recognise Hyundai Coupe, so have posted it as a Sonata to enable me to submit the fault message.

The sensor is located on the left hand rear side of the block (near the bell housing). It is held in place by a 10mm bolt. It's to the right of the exhaust manifold (LH - radiator side) on the V6. Once you purchase the new sensor you'll be able to identify it on the engine. The connector to this sensor is located in the illustration.
A word to the wise... replace the O2 snsr as well.

I'm having a similar problem. 2003 Hyundai Sonata, 4 cylinder. Although CHECK ENGINE flashes, it's only for a second, then the engine comes back to life. Took it too the dealer, and no code is registering. They think it's a fuel system problem, but asked me to bring it in for a full Saturday, will be on 2/21/09 if it doesn't die completely in the meantime.
I have the same problem with a Sanota 2001, engine almost stalls out chucking you almost through the window, and then the car is sluggish and has no power, you can put the petal to the floor and nothing!, the engine light stays on for anywhere between an hour and days at a time, It seems as though the car shifts to a lower gear, I find it helps to keep shifting from drive to 3rd ( automatic transmission) I wish someone would tell me what is going on. On a scale of one to ten, I give this car a one, absolutly the worst I have ever owned!!! replaced far to many parts!!!!!!!!!!!
what is the fault code?
