Shifter stuck in park!

I have a 2007 Chevy Impala, I cant get it out of park. I drove it today and when I can home and parked it nothing unusual happened. So when I went to leave again. I started the car no problems, went to shift it and I couldn't push the button in to move the shifter (Yes foot was on the brake). So I turned the car off and set the alarm, then turned the alarm off, just to make sure it didnt have anything to do with the alarm. I put my foot on the brake then started the car and still was stuck.. Please help!!

You can drill a hole by the passenger seat then stick your finger in to press a silver button to release the lever

You have to take off the plastic all around the gear shifter. You can wedge a screw driver carefully around the edges and pry the plastic off then there is a screw on the shifter take that off and slide the top off and then take off the rubber until the whole shifter is exposed then you will see in the cavity on the right side a little metal round tab on a spring that you have to push in with a screw driver and it will release the shifter. Good luck

I had the same problem. 2007 Impala stuck in park. Turned out to be a wiring harness. The chromed piece around the shifter can be popped up with a screw driver, the plastic below pops up and out. On the right side of the mechanism is a silver button. Push that in with a screw driver and the shift lever can be moved. Not a problem solver but it can be driven to be repaired somewhere.

Thank you yam250! I read this 10 months after you posted, and did just as you described, yep, silver button on the right, got it out of park and into the garage, waiting for daylight to replace the faulty brake lamp switch.

  • rooster050 Jan 07, 2011

Follow the instructions above, and you will be able to move the car. Just happened to my GF and I told her how to do it over the phone. The hard part is locating the button after you take off the chromed piece. Takes a little searching, but the button is defiantly there. Thanks yam!

When you hit the brake pedal, do your brake lights light up??? Maybe the sensor on the pedal is bad and that is why its not releasing the shift lock.

Look above the brake pedal on the linkage for the switch. Maybe there will be a loose wire or it got bent or something?

(even if the brake lights light up, it still might be the switch... some vehicles have 2 switches on the brake pedal)

Thanks a lot for the information, wife calls me and the 07 chevy impala is stuck in park in the drive thru line at Mc Donalds. Without checking here for a solution, I wouldn't have had a clue what to do. Took the top off the console and could see the silver spring mounted switch. Used a long screw driver to push it in and it went right into gear !! You guys are real life savers !!!!

Followed these instructions. Worked perfectly. Left the car in neutral
when I had to stop (set emergency brake) so the 'park' latch would not
re-engage and I wouldn't have to 'pop' the release each time I parked.
In neutral you can turn off the engine but you can't remove the key.
I just left the key in the ignition switch and carried my remote separately
so I could at least lock the doors. - many thanks and good luck

I have been driving my Dad's 2007 Impala until I can save up enough to buy a car of my own. I drove to work as normal and got in the car to go to lunch and the car would not come out of park. I came across this online and managed to find the button to get it out of park. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

On my 2006 HHR, this same thing happened. There is a series of events that affect the shifter moving out of park. When you step on the brake it engages the brake switch. This in turn activates a solenoid that unlocks the shifter. if the brake switch is working the next most likely on these cars id s busted release actuator. The tube in the shift arm has a bar that goes through it and there's a T near the bottom. This weakens the bar and it tends to break. You can replace the whole shifter or do like I did and repair the bar.

2007 Impala stuck in park and gear override silver button won't work. Can't figure out the problem please help

If your 2007 Impala is stuck in park and the gear override silver button doesn't work, there may be a few potential problems that are causing the problem. Here are some common causes and troubleshooting solutions you can try: Brake light switch: The most common cause of this problem is a faulty brake light switch. The brake light switch is responsible for sending a signal to the shift interlock solenoid to release the shifter when the brake pedal is depressed and can prevent the shifter from releasing if the switch does not operate properly. Make sure your brake lights work by pressing on the brake pedal. If they don't work, it's probably a brake light switch issue that needs to be replaced. Shift Interlock Solenoid: The shift interlock solenoid is a mechanism that prevents the shifter from moving without pressing the brake pedal If the solenoid is faulty or a blown fuse can cause the shifter to go into park. Check the fuse connected to the shift interlock system and replace if necessary. If the fuse is good, the solenoid may need to be replaced. Shift Cable: The shift cable connects the shifter to the transmission and allows you to change gears. Damaged, loose, or misaligned cables can prevent the shifter from leaving the parking space. Inspect the shift cable for any obvious issues and make sure it is securely attached to the shifter and transmission. Shift lock control module: Some vehicles have a shift lock control module that ensures proper operation of the shift interlock system. Malfunction of this module can cause the problem. It may be necessary to use a diagnostic scan tool to check for any error codes associated with the module. Ignition switch: Faulty ignition under certain conditions

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

Pull the center colum out and theres a set of wires right by the shifter. One has broken off. There is a release button you can use till you get a new pig tail wire to replace it.

When you turn ignition on it releases a cable that is attached to the shifter also the shifter has a solenoid attached to it that is released when you step on the brake. Both times that I had the problem of button stuck and cant shift out of park the solenoid was sticking and wouldnt release .
