I had made a mistake thinking it was a cutlass. Put high milage trans fluid in. did not change filter. over 200,000 miles but car does not tap and normally ran fine. stays in first sometimes can ease off and slowly give it gas to engage second. and so on. i do not do what a trans gov is and i don't know what ecm is or where to look. AND DOES THE TRANS SHIFT BY VACCUM OR SOME TYPE OF AIR FLOW?

Transmission shift governor is at fault i think,,,you could try checking the fluid levels,,,and then disconnect the battery for half an hour,,,(resett the ecm) and then see what happens.

You have to pump it in because you have a closed case transmission. You won't find a dipstick either.
There is a plug above the drain plug....sort of on the side of the case. You remove that plug and fill it till it seeps out. This is similar to servicing a differential case.

Check the wire from the module to the crank sensor. They go bad. Usually from oil leaks. Is it saturated with oil where it goes under the engine? Also check for power and ground on the two wire plug on the drivers side of the module. It isn't the ecm or anything with it. The ignition system on the 3.1 will work with the ecm unplugged. The ignition system is a stand alone system. It sends signals to the ecm for the fuel injection.

If its a throttle body injection or multiport fuel injection the fuel pump is in the gastank, If it has the optional carburator for that year then it is on the engine block.
