You can try to do the reverse slam fix, which is easy to do:
Reverse slam fix

If it doesn't work, your valve body is probably bad, here is how to swap it, in case you are up for the challenge:
Swapping a valve body on a saturn TAAT trans.

An other possibility is your mainshaft nut could be loose, I don't have an article up for it yet, but it's comming.
An other possibility is that you have a bad VSS (or Vehicle Speed Sensor).
In any case, your transmission is probably OK, the valve body is accessible from the top of your transmission, right under the battery tray.

No reverse is most of the time a valve body issue, shops will try to charge for a transmission swap, when they only need to remove the valve body right under the battery.

1993 saturn sl2 downshifting by itself..automatic transmission..

It's an automatic, it is supposed to upshift and downshift by itself. That why you paid extra for it, so you didn't have to do all that extra thinking and work of moving the shifter.

1995 Saturn SL2 Automatic. Will not shift into gear when first started. Must warm up first, sometimes for 20-30 minutes. Engine starts right up and runs good. What do I need to fix? Thank you Robert

you have dirty cervo valves.Pour one pint of deisel fuel into transmission let run for approx.5 minutes.Drain all of fluid out.Change filter on front of transmission(it looks like a oil filter)replace fluid and that should take care of problem.

Transmission problems

I have a 97 SL2 and it has the typical slam into reverse, but also after a couple minutes of driving it downshifts... It stays there for like 3-5 minutes then runs fine afterwards... What is the problem?

What does it mean when a transmission has a preasure issue and how expencive is it to fix?

a pressure issue means a complete tear down and overhaul of the transmission, an automatic trans is a hydraulicly controlled device so no pressure no operation, the cost will be 6-8 hours of labor or 20 if they overhaul your trans and not install a rebuilt one, around $2500

Jerks going into 3rd Gear

more than likely you will need a valve body rebuild. you are probably looking around $500+. don't let them try to sell you a transmission. you could search ebay and see if you can find a "rebuilt valve body" but make sure it is for a '00 to '02 SL2

There are only two paths for oil there. The rear main, and a oil galley plug a little higher up, about 2 o'clock.

Got in my 2000 Saturn sl2 after going in to get my son. Got in the car started. Made a terrible bucking noise and hesitated to go in reverse but when it did it bucked the whole car and then on the way home...

This car is known to have a couple problems with the automatic transmission. One possibility is that the differential pin has come loose and his hitting on the inside of the transmission. This requires an overhaul, however it doesn't sound like your problem. This transmission is also known for having the valve body in the transmission wear out and cause erratic shifting. This could be your problem. It is still a fairly expensive repair, but does not require the transmission to be removed or overhauled. Hope this helps.
