Clean the Carburettor , Airflow system and the Idle system. It could also be the actual pedal is faulty.

It sounds like your idol is to high on ur vehicle depending on the year u will have a carb orator and there should be an adjustment for your idol ( mainly where your throstle cable hooks up to your carb orator ) but make sure you don't make adjustments your not sure about which can lead to runnin your car too lean or rich.
There is a knock in that motor, you have a bad coil pack, broken plug, or bad plug wires. Id say a bad coil though the way it is running. Follow plug wires back to where they go onto the 2 coil packs, look for cracks in coils, start car or crank it over at night you will see the sparks arcing from coils or plug wires.

I suggest check the fuel pressure first,these will lead towards further troubleshooting:----

Try cleaning your MAF (Mass Air Flow ) sensor, when my sensor went bad I couldn't keep the car running and it threw wierd codes on the computer.

Withoutknowing if the check engine light is on it could be a variety of things including but not limited to the o2 sensor, throttle positioning sensor, and the MAF and MAP sensors. Best diagnosed by using an OBDII scanner to scan for codes. If no codes are present I would then check for the pressure coming from the fuel pump to make sure it is still functioning.

Suspect idle air control valve. Also clean the throttle body. If its gummed up dirty it will restrict air.

The fuel pump in this car is electric and is inside the fuel tank, it uses the fuel it sets in for lubrication and for cooling, when u run out of gas this causes the tiny electric pump to severly overheat and many times it ruins the pump, and that is what has happened here, u will need to pull the gas tank and replace the fuel pump. also replace the fuel filter.
