I have a 1990 Toyota Camry 4cyl., autotransmission, with 235k on it. Even though the car is old with many miles it has ran perfectly fine the last 3 years I have owned it. The other day however it would not go into reverse. Also the light that is on the dash board showing the car is in reverse didn't come on. I shifted the gears back and forth from d to n d2 d1 etc. and nothing happened so i had to push the car out of the parking spot. Then in drive the car drove and shifted just fine with no slipping, hesitations or anything. The next time i tried to put it in reverse it did the same thing but when i turned the car off and restarted it the car went into reverse. I drove the car like this for a couple days and besides reverse the car drove normally. Then today when i was driving the car seemed to slip out of drive and wouldnt move no matter how much gas i gave it. I towed the car home and checked the transmission fluid. it was brownish, slightly low and a little burnt smelling. I added some fluid and the car drove 1-2 miles before it "slipped" out of gear and wouldnt go back into gear again. When it was in gear it shifted fine like it always has and seemed to run just as it did before. Ive tried driving it 4-5 times and it drives fine for a while put eventually slips out of gear. However when I turn the car off and on it will go into gear for a few feet and then slip out. Also the lights on the dash that show which gear the car is in will not light up except d2 and d1....park reverse neutral and drive will not and previously they did. I was wondering if I do need a new transmission, a flush, new filter, solenoid, or perhaps some type of sensor because when its cold it will engage in the correct gear it shifts and works perfect but for some reason once warm it just slips out and wont move until the car is cold or i turn it off and on again.
Could be a long list of things.
Its too late for a filter change. Doing that now would probably make matters worse.
The trans uses electric solenoids and a pump to apply pressure to the clutches. So either could be faulty given the age and mileage.
I'm not sure if the shifting problem is connected to the shift indicator lights problem.
You may need to take it to a trans shop to find out for sure. And they will not want to touch it with that many miles on it.
A regular mechanic might be able to do a pressure test on it to at least find out if it is the pump or not.

check the transmission fluid, it may be low, if not look and see if it looks black if it does you may need to change the transmission filter and fluid

yep, sounds like your transmissions on its last leg, mabye you can get by, by starting in 2nd, if you have the option lol, but auto tran's are pretty cheap on ebay or try www.supraforums.com seen one for 300$

The CEL means that the car's computer has detected an error in one of the car's systems. For cars of model years 1996 and later there is a standard connector in the car and you can hook up an OBD-2 code scanner to read the error code from the car's computer. However, for cars sold before 1996, there is no standard, so your best bet is to take the car to a mechanic who has experience with your make and model.
One thing you can try, to turn the light off, is disconnect your car's battery terminals for a few minutes. The CEL should be off when you restart the car. If the CEL stays off, then you're ok, because it may have come on due to a temporary condition somehow related to your parking brake, and the condition is resolved. However, if the CEL stays on or comes back on, this means you have a "hard" error code that definitely needs to be checked out.
In my opinion, although it is possible that the CEL and the parking brake are related, most likely it is just a coincidence that the CEL came on shortly afterward, and there is another cause for the CEL, that should be investigated.
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions.
