Trunk latches, but doesn't close fully

Out of nowhere, the mechanism that fully closes and seals my trunk has stopped working. The trunk will still latch, and it seems this is a good enough seal to prevent water from getting into the trunk, however it doesn't fully close and causes the "Trunk" light to be constantly on whenever I'm driving. Any quick fixes for this, or should I just take it in to have it checked?

SOURCE: my 92 eldo cadi trunk won't close it latches but

There is a electric motor on the lower part of the trunk that usually goes bad. Not on the trunk lid but the trunk part. You can remove the assembly and take it apart so you can turn the latch all the way down , Once youy have done this you can put it back in place. Make sure you unplug the motor so it won't go up again, You should be able to use the release button inside.

SOURCE: Trunk Latch will not pull closed.

The small switch is the trunk by the pull down motor with the flap that depresses down is at fault. That is what you call the truck pull down switch. You can take this part and show it to a Cadillac or Ford parts department sales person and get a replacement for you car. Ford uses the same part for their Lincolns and Crown Vic's. The part is made by the very same supplier for Ford & GM. Ford will sell this part at a much lower cost as well compared to GM

The trunk on my 2016 ford fusion will not stay shut, I can hear the latch making noise for several minutes. what can be the issue

There could be a few possible causes for your trunk not staying shut on your 2016 Ford Fusion. Here are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

Check the latch mechanism: Make sure the latch is fully engaging with the striker plate when you close the trunk. If the latch is not properly aligned, it may not be able to hold the trunk closed. You may be able to adjust the latch or striker plate to fix this issue.

Inspect the hinges: If the hinges on the trunk are damaged or worn out, they may not be able to support the weight of the trunk properly. In this case, you may need to replace the hinges to fix the problem.

Check the trunk seal: If the seal around the trunk is damaged or not properly seated, it may be allowing air to escape, which could cause the trunk to open. Try inspecting the seal and making sure it is in good condition.

Consider the trunk lid: If the trunk lid itself is bent or out of alignment, it may be causing the latch to not fully engage. You may need to have a mechanic check the trunk lid to see if it needs to be adjusted or replaced.

If you are unable to find the cause of the issue on your own, it may be a good idea to have a mechanic take a look at your car to diagnose and fix the problem.

My boot wont close fully

  • Press down on your trunk, and have somebody release your trunk's release mechanism from inside your car simultaneously. These systems can become jammed but can sometimes be released if a gentle downward pressure is applied to your trunk while the mechanism is being activated. If this is the problem, apply some lubricant.
  • Clean the latch and the area where it connects to the chassis. If dirt or debris has become lodged here, it can stop the latch from connecting properly. It's a good idea to vacuum the area to ensure no small bits of gravel have become trapped and stopped the mechanism from securing properly.
  • Examine the latch and the area where it connects to the body of the car. Either of these might have become bent out of shape or damaged in some other way if the trunk has been shut with an obstruction in the way. If this is the case, contact your vehicle's manufacturer or a local garage to find a replacement if the elements cannot be repaired.
Check the latch mechanism, it may have accidentally already be in the closed or lock position. If it is, you will have to pry down on the latch tangs with a screw driver while pulling latch handle to the open position.
Latch could also be seized, in that case , use a thin oil liberally on latch mechanism, and work the mechanism open and shut closing and opening with screw driver and boot handle.

Trunk wont stay closed

Several times I've been able to fix this problem by tightening the bolts that hold the trunk latch.
If that doesn't work, order and install a new latch. After fixing the latch, find a friend, and
get into the trunk, and make sure that the emergency release (for trapped children) also
still works.

My 2008 Chrysler Sebring Limited convertible has a problem with the trunk latch. It won't stay closed. It keeps unlatching. Do you know what the problem is? How do I get it to stop unlatching?

I did this to my car once. Be sure the latch isn't closed as you are trying to close the trunk. With the trunk open pop the trunk once, then see if the trunk latches properly.

Our 2003 Lincoln Towncar trunk has suddenly began not shutting properly. When it closes, it does not fully close to a seal. Upon our troubleshooting we feel the mechanism which brings the trunk to a full...

Once the lid is latched there is a motor that pulls the latch assembly down to finish closing the lid.

I would check the latch mechinism make sure it's not moving around on you like the bolts have loosened or that anything is bent. Also there is a switch in the mechanism that activates it to finish closing as well, open the trunk and close the jaw on the lock with a screwdriver or something similar, and see if you can hear the motor run, if not I would place blame on the switch or the motor itself. And as always I would check for loose / broke wires or a bad ground in the immeidate vicinity of the mechanism.

I have a 2002 chevy cavelier, i used the button on the dash to open the trunk, now the trunk will not latch when i close it.

Try pushing the button under the dash back into its normal 'unactivated' position, and see if the trunk will latch shut. It could be a sticky latch mechanism in the trunk, which some silicone lubricant or WD40 might help to free up. Check also that the latch has not actually returned to the 'locked' position prior to trying to close the trunk. That would definitely stop you from closing the trunk properly! Try unlocking the trunk latching mechanism again.
