Have a lock smith cut a new key, the original key might have worn down where it wont hit the points in the keys cylinder. that is the first thing I would try since its the most common problem with the ions.

If the engine won't crank with compression in the cylinders, either the head gasket has blown or something else major has happened. You will have to get it towed to a shop. If it cranks normally but won't start, you have to figure out if it is a fuel or ignition problem. Did the temp gauge show it was overheating before it died ?
you could just have dead cell in the battery which isn't getting enough amps to the starter,, have the battery LOAD checked,, that will tell you if the battery is actually good, just because it registers 12 volts isn't necessarily an indication that the required amps are present.
