My first instinct is to suggest cleaning the Neutral Safety Switch (NSS) using any type of spray on electrical contact cleaner. For other suggestions, go to: http://www.forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=39526

You will have to remove ALL shift linkage & replace
any worn bushings & possibly weld up worn areas &
file out to,get things back in working order

Your dealing with lots of rust,a lot of it,lots of use & wear

Best to completely remove it all & have it media blasted,then
rehab & paint the pieces

The gear shifter doesn't connect to the clutch, the clutch pedal and clutch release fork connect to the clutch. The shift linkage connects to the transmission through a 3 part lever with 2 adjustment points.

The original shifter bush (shifter sheet) is made of nylon and after 20 years of sitting in oil they crumble away and disappear.
Replacement is cheap and easy.

If the shifter cable has broken (specifically the plastic loop) you can replace it with a new one from Ebay. Just look up "Saturn Bushing Man" and select the Shifter Cable Eyelet loop. It is a part that is $25 plus shipping. It is an easy fix. The other possibility is that the shifter bushing has broken. "Saturn Bushing Man" on ebay also sells a Delron Plastic Replacement or a Stainless Steel Shifter bushing replacement. Either of these will work as well and are only a $29 part. I have owned Saturns since 1997 and I had both of these parts go out on my 94 Saturn SL2.

It sounds to me like the linkage between the gear shift handle and the transmission case.
You'll have to get under the car to see if that's the case so take an adjustable spanner under there with you. You may also need to find a a bolt or nut to put it back together. If that's the problem, put some "thread locker" on the bolt threads and it won't happen again.

there is a plastic bushing that goes on the clutch arm and in the master cylinder arm that wears out. it's enough to cause your problem.you can get an assortment pack at the parts store. it's still cheper than the dealer
