Break failiure I have a 2002 Volkswagen passat estate, diesel. Recently the brakes completely failed while driving in ice conditions -20°C on a mountain road (no servo assistance) as I descended into warmer air they started working again. The Volkswagen garage said that there is a join in the vacuum line that can collapse (where it passes through the engine compartment bulkhead) & they inserted a short section of rigid plastic hose into it. This seemed to work until a few days later when again at about minus 7°C I put on the break & they locked on, the pedal also stayed depressed. I found that I could pull the pedal back up with my foot slowly & the breaks would release. As soon as the temperature goes above minus 2°C the breaks start to work perfectly. Also when this happens there are no fault lights that come on. Any ideas? Cheers. I have a 2002 Volkswagen passat estate, diesel. The system was flushed with new brake fluid when the problem first occurred, but made no difference.

    Jensa,

    Thanks for your reply,

This was exactly the problem. I have since found out that this is quite a common problem & is subject to a recall on this model

the only thing I can say, is that the mechanics at VW Monaco had never heard of this problem (surprise!!! it never freezes in Monaco) & they are supposed to be qualified engieers specialised in in this field. Thanks again,

    David.

Hi, I've about the same problem on a '03 passat diesel. I'm about to check out the problem and found that a lot of water is trapped in the air intake plenum as the drain holes in the compartment is full of dirt. Might be the same in your case, making a small amount of water is sucked into the brake booster, causing the mechanical parts to freeze. Lift the cover over the air plenum and check for water present there.

Well sounds to me like you might have some moisture in the fluid which can cause the breaks to fail. Have your break system flushed totally out and refilled. Brake fluid is very touchy. If you leave brand new brake fluid bottle open for a few days it will draw moisture from the air and ruin the fluid.

Vw passat tdi 2001 4dr

You should have a servo pump to help the pressure on diesel models. If the pump fails, then the brakes feel soft as though there is no pressure there. The other fault is, that a wheel cylinder or some other brake componant is leeking fluid. Cheek for fluid leeks and if there are none get the pump checked out.
