Full time 4wd 5.2 98 jeep grand cherokee limited
i just replaced my cv axle on front drivers side. i was hearing a clikcing sound. someone suggested that the new cv axle i put in might have been bad and to replace it again. i thought fare enough there was a warranty so i was covered. i just replaced the cv axle for a second time and yet sill im hearing a clicking coming from the front drivers side. at slower speeds 1 - 30 the clicking is very audible it clicks faster when i accelerate. when i drive straight it dosent seem to click ( as far as i can tell) but when turning it gets louder and is ver clear.
also when i cut the wheel and give my car gas it hops and its almost like the tires skip and lose traction.
so far i have replaced in the past 3 weeks both front axles (drivers side twice, outer tie rod end driver side. had an allignment. both front shocks. and a idle air conrtol sensor.
oh and my o2 sensor in my cat is saying my cat is bad. at 130k im guessing my cat is bad and the sensor is right.
Did you support the vehicle on a lift and run it, with wheels engaged?
Since you have changed all the usual suspects, Have you checked the hub bearings? It could be that, or, something stupid like a backing plate hitting a rotor.
Regarding the cat/o2 sensor thing. Cats do go bad, so do o2 sensors but, generally a code for an o2 sensor indicates a problem elsewhere, causing a lean or rich condition in the exhaust pipe, beyond the parameters of the o2 sensor. PS: check warranty on cat. generally it runs longer than many other components.
Hub bearing will not make noise on a lift unless it is extremely worn. You cannot generate the kind of pressure on the bearing when turning by hand, necessary to feel a damaged roller or race. With weight off the bearing running on a lift, the same holds true. When hub bearings/front wheel drive vehicles first came out, I had the same problem with a customers car, and went through much the same head scratching you are. As a last resort, with no supportive information, I finally changed the hub bearing and the problem disappeared! Even after I knew the bearing was bad, I still could not feel anything wrong with it! Unless you have a pad on a brake caliper that is moving excessively, That's the only other place I'd look!!
Well yeah... pull that shaft & check the U joint!!!
You are hurting my brain!!!! Thought you said the noise was in the front end!!!!
Got to go... Watching Chargers Game!!!

SOURCE: CV cplaced still clicking
Check the front drive line. If it has a double cardan u-joint at the rear and a cv joint at the front it is probably the front cv joint on the drive line. Eventually it will break. Manual states it requires replacing the entire front shaft as this CV can't be replaced separately. The other solution is to have a drive line repair shop build a new shaft with a skip yoke and u joint at the front and new yoke on the front axle housing.

hub bearing had a little resistance when i removed the front axle. i could still turn it with my hands but no grinding sounds and backing plate is very worn to where there is nothing left to hit it. i put it on a lift and ran it but coulnd not mimic the sound. cat is original and after 10 years and 130k im guessing ym warranty is up
ok i just got my friend to drive my car so i could lay out the door and look under the car while in motion. its coming from the slip yoke rear transfer case area. i checked to see if there was play (no play) so i pushed it up and i got a litle clank. any ideas to narrow it down?
