Recently(about 15 days ago) had my 2005 Jeep Liberty 3.7 engine cooling system flushed and new Valvoline coolant added at50% rate. On Friday October 26th went on a trip of about 138 miles. Parked the Jeep, did some walking and shopping for about 3 hours. Took a ride to about 8 miles, alarm went off, notice the temperature was at the 3/4 mark, turned around and pulled over and let cool down. Got back to the hotel and let the engine completely cool down. Left the next morning and made it about 109 miles with no problems, stopped at a store on the way home for about 30 minutes, had about 28 miles to go, after about 12 miles went above the 3/4 mark, pulled over and found a hose to cool the radiator and hose near the thermostat, made the next 16 miles to get home but got to the 3/4 mark again. What is going on?
It's overheating, for sure,
is coolant levels dropping? cold checked at rad cap?

if it overheat only parked, check fan for full ops.
if overheats moving too, wont stay cool moving fast

bad thermostat , they have 7 year life says STANT. (and why)
belts slipping (to water pump)
rad cores blocked (IR thermo gun it) ask
water pump impellers rust 1/2 gone?
all this assumes no coolant loss, if you have loss, tell where.,

1. The radiator cap if working correctly it will release pressure in the system provided the cap you have is the correct pressure setting. If you are having a problem with pressure then replace the cap with a new radiator cap with the correct pressure setting. Do not use a cap with a pressure setting other than the original equipment pressure spec. So you do not go to the parts store and buy any radiator cap on the shelf that fits because they come with different pressure ratings and some of these will be totally unsuitable for your car.
2. If the pressure valve is stuck in the "old" cap the pressure release system will not work.
3. Overheating
Air pockets in the cooling system can definitely cause overheating and can retard coolant flow through the system. If you are draining the radiator to replace the coolant or replacing the radiator you need to follow the correct procedures for bleeding air out of the system for that particular engine after coolant refilling. Some engines have bleeder screws on the cooling system to assist in the air bleeding procedure and some don't.
There are various causes for overheating so don't assume it will necessarily be solved by bleeding any remaining air from the cooling system and replacing the radiator cap with one that works.
Other causes can be...........
1. Faulty cooling system thermostat. (Replace the Thermostat)
2. Faulty water pump, especially if the impellers have corroded away or have disintegrated in the case of those design genius water pumps with plastic impellers. (Replace the water pump)
3. Cooling fans not working and if so the cause needs to be tracked. Check that your fans are kicking in. If the engine is overheating the fans should be running because they will switch on when the coolant reaches a specific temp and well before the coolant gets excessively hot.
4. A partial blockage in the coolant passages inside the engine but not in the radiator if you have a new one. If the coolant is not changed at the required intervals(frequently the case with many owners) or is over diluted with water you can get a build up of debris. If products like stop leak have been used in the system this can create similar problems with partial blockages inside the engine coolant passages.
5. A compression leak into the cooling system.
If you have bled air from the system and have continuous air bubbles in the cooling system I would suspect a compression leak. In that event a basic leak down test will show if you have compression gasses leaking into the cooling system and from which cylinder(s). The spark plug is removed and compressed air is forced into the cylinder via the spark plug fitting and air bubbles will show up in the coolant of there is a leak into the cooling system.

Have the problem with overheating addressed immediately. Running the engine with an overheat condition will cause expensive engine damage many times the cost of fixing the overheating issue.
check to see if you have a viscous fan hub and if so then replace it . Check when the overheating occurs If it is at stop lights but cools down when travelling. It is the hub. If it overheats when going slow and under load it will be the hub. If it overheats when travelling fast then check the radiator for core blockage and have a compression test done to check for head gasket / cracks Run fault codes and check for blocked exhaust system --cat converter)
Sounds like low flow issue. Flush and clean system, PROPERLY! Buy a flush kit, drain system, blow compressed air through, fill with cleaner/water mix, run for 30 min with heat on, drain system, blow out with compressed air, fill with water, run for 30 min, drain, blow out with compressed air, fill with 60% coolant mix.
I doubt the radiator is plugged up. The hose should be cooler coming out of the radiator than going in (top). If the overflow tank is bubbling it could be from the hot coolant, or you could have a head gasket leak and allowing compression - exhaust into the cooling system.
a leak in coolant system will cause air pocket in the coolant system around the engine coolant temperature sensor.coolant sensor is a thermistor in which when hot cool cause it resistance decrease which affect the voltage from sensor to pcm which will cause engine coolant to turn on.if coolant level okay,check coolant fan fuse and relay, if all is good,engine coolant temperature sensor could be bad or have vechicle code scan for pcm problems it control the coolant fan.fill coolant system to correct level make sure engine coolat reservoir is at full cold mark and not empty.fill coolant system check for leaks,refill coolant overflow jug back to full cold mark dont over fill, if coolant overflow stay empty you have leak either its leaking or you have radiator hoses or radiator leaking coolant.when coolant overflow jug run dry it cause air get in coolant system causing overheating problems.
Thermostats almost always reside in a housing at the engine side end of the upper radiator hose. Drain coolant first, then loosen radiator hose to access thermostat housing. If you can't find the housing, consult your vehicle service manual for location.
Loosen the bolts that hold down the thermostat housing. Remove the housing to reveal the thermostat.
Note the location and orientation of thermostat relative to the engine. Remove thermostat.
Use a scraper to remove old gasket material from all mounting surfaces.
Place new gasket on housing. Use a small amount of grease or adhesive to hold it in place during reassembly.
Make sure new thermostat is oriented properly and reinstall the housing.
Reconnect all hoses. Close radiator petcock. Refill cooling system with recommended 50/50 blend of water and coolant. Run engine and heater to purge air from cooling system. Recheck the coolant level once engine is cool. found info on web site listed Good luck
