94' 5.0 ford mustang. Just changed the fuel filter and I was thinking it might be the fuel regulator but not too sure. It wants to start because it tries but it just doesn't sometimes. Some days it drives just fine and then other times it only makes it a couple miles and dies. And it won't start back up unless I wait a few hours and then it always manages to make it home and that's it. Never seen/had this problem before so any advice will be much appreciated.

It's got all the symptoms of a leak in the fuel line. You may want to start backward at the tank and work your way all the way to the carb to find it but it would be surprising if it was something else. All the best.

SOURCE: ford festiva just dies while going down the road
i had many problems with what i thought was my starter/ignition and replaced my alternator and battery. tho they were helpful, ultimately the problem was a small fusible link that had needed to be replaced, as it was over heating and when it would it would stop whatever electrical signal was imperitive to the car actually running. if i was driving and the wire over heated, it would stop running right on the road. i just used some 12 AWG stranded wire and it stopped stalling.i discovered it by accident when i touched the wire and noticed it was excessively hot and worn down. it was located in the upper right hand corner under the hood, where there are 3 wires, brown and black.

It sounds like you might have a clogged catalatic converter on the exhaust system.

You may have tripped the inertia switch. It's a small black box in the trunk with a red push-button; it is designed to pop if the sensor registers a certain g-force and kills power to the fuel pump to prevent gas from being pumped out after an accident. Look for that behind the trunk interior panels.
Very good problem description btw.
