Had tranny rebuilt by shade tree mechanic that came well recommended. When I got the car back I had to start in first or second to get going, so I had both selenoids replaced but now have to start in first and there is no fourth, which I am suspecting did not work when I first got the car back
Taking that it is an automatic you should not be able to start it an anything other than neutral or park
That is switches and nothing to do with the transmission so get that sorted first
now if you put it in first ( drive) and it doesn't move , that indicates that the torque converter clutch servo/solenoid is not working ( wiring , connections , TCM or solenoid
with no 4th or OD it is the servo/ solenoid , VSS, or TCM problems
So what can you check
wiring and harness connections
run the fault codes as that may give an indication of the faults
take it to a professional auto shop for a proper diagnosis and quote
SOURCE: Oldsmobile Alero EGR valve bad
yes you can do it yourself the egr valve is located on the exaust manifold closest to the fire wall unfortunately it has to be replace. it has an electronic lead to it and is vaccum operated to replace it is not a difficult task. the part can be purchased at a Napa or Oreilly's for alot less than at a dealership. just make sure your gasket surfaces are clean for replacement of new gaskets. if you have a code reader than can reset the code that is a benefit however if you do not you have to have a scan tool to reset the code. please rate the solution....thanks

take it to a different shop. get it corrected and hit small claims court. this is what causes accidends and people get killed by stupidity.

You can replace it easily, $74.99 2yr replacement. Just unhook the battery. the egr is a plug in play. once you hook it up, that's all needs to be done.
