Power steering fluid leaking and there is a whining noise along with a rattling sound on my 2000 Nissan Maxima.

I first noticed my power steering fluid was leaking along with the usual whining noise when it's low. Now it's started making a rattling noise, could my power steering pump be going out?

Doesn't matter you have a leak

You should have stopped using it
when you first noticed the leak & had
it resolved, now you may need a new pump

SOURCE: Power steering leak --a lot

Three areas of concern. A leaking steering rack: By looking under the car, look for the rods which tie the left and right wheels together in the center. By turning the steering wheel fully to the left or right, you can look behind the front wheels 1/2 way down and you will see the rod I am referring to. Following the rod to it source of attachment, it will have a rubber bellows type cover surrounding is as it gets near the center of the car. If the rubber is torn and has oily residue, that is where you are loosing your power steering fluid. It is a leaking power steering rack. A fairly expensive repair, best left to a professional. Buying a used one is a real crapshoot because they are very prone to failure as they get older.
2. The high pressure hoses will leak on these cars. It is difficult to see these without putting the car on a lift because the pump is on the firewall side of the engine. If you notice the fluid dripping near the pump, it is a higher probability than not that it is the high pressure hose than the pump. Also look at the return hose coming from the reservoir, Sometimes the clamps aren't that tight and it will cause a leak, but your description sounds like a leak under pressure.

SOURCE: Power Steering Fluid

sometimes adding brake fluid to the power steering pump will stop the leak if its not to bad.you may have to keep adding as it leaks down untill you use about a bottle ,before it stops the leak.

Check your MAF out. If your revs are slow and you lose power top end it could be faulty.

Power steering squeal

You should not turn power steering to extreme locks and hold them there constantly. The squealing is the noise the power steering unit is screaming," You are killing me".

Hyundai sonata power steering

It could be a leaking hose, and the PS fluid is dropping on the hot exhaust. Check the fluid level in the power steering reservoir. If low or dry, look for a leak.
I don't know about the rattling-better have someone look at it.

Whining coming from front

It sounds like the power steering pump has a broken pump vane and will need to be replaced and then the system flushed to get the debris out of the system so it won't ruin the new pump.

If that rattle sound more like a whining the problem is a leak, that is why the problem went away when they replace the power steering fluid.

Steering makes a whining noise - where is the fluid reservoir?

the suspect part for a power steering whine is the power steering pump, flush (very important) the system and replace the PS pump..

Power steering noise

First thing is to check the level of the power steering fluid. If you're low, add enough to bring it back into range. If not, remove the cap and jack the front end off the ground (both wheels). With the cap off, turn the wheel lock to lock, back and forth, several times, to see if any air bubbles need to be bled out (this will bleed them). Then check the fluid level again and top it off as needed.

If neither of these helps, have the steering system checked by a shop - you may have a problem with the steering shaft, the tie rods, or the rack itself.
