How long has it been leaking? If the transmission ran low on fluid for some time, that could lead to big trouble. If it was kept above the add mark at all costs, then a seal or gasket should end your worries. The location of the leak is important. If it happens to be a front shaft seal that leaks (fluid would be gathered behind the lower inspection plate, on the bottom front of the transmission), then the transmission would have to be pulled out to replace that seal. But other leaks like a pan gasket leak is pretty easy to fix.
Probably from the waterpump, there should be a little hole under it behind the pulley. It is there incase the pump seal leaks. Rub your finger around it to see if it is wet. Otherwise a the top hose may be leaking on the engine end. Do the same finger trick.
I'm guessing your leaking antifreeze. If so you have a bad water pump. If you have any more questions feel free to ask and Ill do my best to answer them.
Your friend is probably correct. The pump has a "weep hole" that leaks when the seals have failed. If tightening the clamp does nothing, replace the pump.
IT IS THE WATER-PUMP. PLEASE DON'T WAIT FOR IT TO OVER-HEAT BECAUSE THEN IT WILL BE TOO LATE, AND VERY COSTLY. PRICE A HEAD-GASKET JOB AND COMPARE IT TO THE COST OF A WATER PUMP. HOPE THIS HELPS YOU MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE. BEST OF LUCK.
Likely above it, what engine do you have?
