Engine idled too low sometimes dies when stopped

2004 silverado 5.3 liter

    2003 6.0 same problem

  • bergie_1950 Feb 25, 2009

1999 Silverado with 5.3 liter engine.  Started having a high idle problem.  Engine wants to idle at 1,000 RPM after it's been driven and heats up.  Cleaned the EGR valve, cleaned and tested the IAC valve.  After the engine cools down the idle comes back to the factory specs. 5-600 RPM's.

I have no idea where to look next.  Any ideas?

2005 silverado 4.3 liter runs for 5 min then dies starts back up runs then dies

Sounds like a clogged fuel filter or bad fuel pump. If the fuel flow is restricted, then engine will start and idle but at higher speeds it will starve.

Idles roughly, then low when stopped or in park, then dies. Decreasing gas mileage. Slow to accelerate

Sometimes that's caused by a vacuum leak near the manifold area.

Sometimes air in the coolant will cause an idle problem. Air will keep the air temp sensor from sending proper info.
Hope this helps.

I have a Chevrolet silverado 2000 V6, 4.3L The engine is start right away if i turn the key to start. At park (P) position or drive (D) position the engine try to stop if I press the paddle to accelerate,...

Does the engine accerlerate in neutral? Or does it die at higher speed in neutral??? If so you may have a plugged up exhaust system. Try disconnecting or loosneing up the flange before the catalic converter and then see if it runs normal.

Oil pressure on a 2004 5.3 liter silverado at idle is around 20

The pressure to be most concerned with is the reading in gear at idle with engine warmed up...Low end really should not be below 20. If pressure wanders, change the sending unit and check actual pressure with a mechanical gauge if necessary. The age and quality of your oil, as well as temperature all play a part in pressure, as well as internal wear from time & miles of use. If pressure changes with rpm, that is normal. 40psi is good while driving.
need more info just ask.

Dies when idling, does better with a/c on, but still dies

this is your problem:

Here are the most common causes of surges, stalls at stops, low erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake
