SOURCE: can not open hood on 1998 town and country lx

is the cable that goes to the hood latch broken?
or is it inside the van were the cable broke?

"if the cable is still were it should be....but the lever is broken......you can get a pair or pliers and pull the cable "metal one not the plastic cover"
but if the cable broke inside the hood and now you cant get it to open....

The only tools required are a set of pliers, a good work light, and coat hanger.

"try to make a hook with the coat hanger"

Set the work light down low so that it shines up through the grill at your latch. The coat hanger pulling action. You must use the coat hanger close to where the cable connects to the mechanism, then pull in a direction as close to that of the cable as possible.

be patient......and if you get it to open have the replacement cable ready.......

hope this helps XD

Broken hood release larch on '01 Pontiac Grand Am.

You can try going up from the bottom behind the bumper cover, or thru the grille opening. You may be able to pull the hood latch with a hook such as a coat hanger or pry it with a crowbar.
You may have to have the bumper cover removed to gain access.

Hood latch won't latch when closing

Raise hood, have some one go pull hood latch and you look at latch and see if it releases,if it doesn't then cable may need replacing,I would'nt completely shut hood cause you may not get back open, also check hood latches bolts and latch for something bent or broken.

When I pull the hood release, the hood doesn't pop up. I either have to have a second person lift slightly on the hood while I pull the release, or I have to wedge something under the edge of the hood...

No the bumpers don't do that. After time it seems the latch itself bends. Look at it and see where it is hitting. There is some adjustment in the catch at the bottom/grill. But I usually just bend the latch left or right as needed. You can use a pry bar to bend it or just hit it with a hammer. Be careful not to hit the hood.

How do i open the hood.

there should be a lever that is on the bottom edge of dash that is under the steering wheel along the trim. if the handle is broken you can use pliers to grab the cable and pull it to get the hood to realse. if you found all that and i seems to work ok then when pulling the release lever have a friend hit or shake the hood to get it to pop up a little so that you can open it all the way.

I would have someone hold the hood release latch while bumping the front of the hood to try to bump the hood loose. Once opened, be sure to lubricate the hood latch under the hood and also lubericate the safety latch as well to prevent this in the future. Use white lithium grease to lube all latches. Be sure to work the latch a couple dozen times after lubricating a few times before closing the hood to ensure it is working properly.

Where is the latch for opening the hood ?

The red release latch is down under the dash on the extreme left hand side. A release tongue should stick out from the radiator grill when the latch is opened. Pulling on this tongue will release the hood When you open the hood the angle is initially restricted to about 45 degrees which is fine for minor jobs. If you need extra room, the left hand hinge has a latch pin which can be swung inwards to allow the hood to move up to about 50 degrees. Releasing the second latch pin on the right hand hinge allows the hood to go vertical. You will have to release the left hand hinge latch pin to close the hood.

Hood latch cable fails to release hood when

I would try pushing down and pulling up on the hood while someone operates the hood latch. I'd try to spray some WD-40 between the hood and grill area. From underneath, you may be able to use a long screw driver to try to move the release lever over to release the hood.
