Your "cheapest" alternative to the repair of a ******, is to find one at a salvage yard and swap it out. Repairing transmissions is a difficult job and even some of the best repairmen who say they know "how" **** at it.

The most common problem other than a broken cable is rust.
if you are careful the cover for the release handle can be removed by taking out the clip at the front and then popping up the tab on the back to access the star screw. After removing the clip and screw gently pry the cover off start at the front then lift the rear.
with the cover off soak the lever with a good penetrating lube like WD40 to free it up. I like to heat these up so I carefully remove the 2 10mm bolts that hold the lever to the floor. The plastic handles just slide straight off I find its best to do this with the unit removed from the floor then you can pry the underside of the handles.

SOURCE: Subaru Impreza gas cap door won't open

If there is one - In trunk - directly behind the gas filler door - behind trunkliner (carpet)
The cable should not have any problems... use a partner to hold the door release and try and pry it open with your fingers.
The spring popper may be bad.
Try this if you dont have an assistant :D

I had this problem with my STI -- easy to fix by bending the little metal on the inside of the fuel door that provides the spring action to open the door. 5 second fix

SOURCE: subaru impreza automatic transmission won t shift

Try replacing the transmission filter and the trannie fluid. Mine would only go in reverse, and now it drives pretty well. This year has a screw on filter. Hope this helps

What years of the Subaru Impreza have interchangeable transmissions?

Looks like 99 to 01. You really have to watch transmission swaps. They may bolt up, but gear ratios and computer controls won't work.

1997 subaru impreza wont go into reverse

The subaru gear linkage from the gear stick to the transmission often breaks or gets jammed on something. Look under the car where the gear leaver goes down to the transmission and make sure there is nothing obstructing it. Otherwise try adjusting the clutch linkage to make sure it is completely disengaging.

Got subaru impreza wrx turbo 1993 , fith gear keeps popping out and grinds as it goes into fith

Time to look around in junkyards or ebay for a similar transmission with much lower mileage, or google around and see if you can exchange that tranny for a rebuilt one.

1995 subaru impreza looking to purchase, how reliabl is the transmission it's a manual?

very. the manual box is quite tough, as are most subaru parts. I have had a lot of imprezas and a legacy and they are quite bullet-proof except for a fuel starvation fault in hard-tuned turbo models but that due to fuel rail design and too much boost ;)

Sure sounds like a throw out bearing having too much room. Might need adjustment.
