92 SL1 won't start, turns over but not getting gas, or floods

I bought a 92 SL1 in June of this year, it had a LOT of miles on it, the odometer is broken at 252,552 miles, so lord knows how many actual miles are on it. But for only $500.00, it looked and ran great, UNTIL recently it just wouldn't start, it turned over, sputtered and backfired and ALMOST started but just ended up draining the battery. SO I replaced the plugs and wires, charged the battery and it worked, or so I thought. The first 2 times I drove it, it ran fine, but still idled high. Now if it does start, chances are in the first 5 minutes, the first time you stop, you'll die when you hit the gas pedal, sometimes not. Or you'll get somewhere and come back to your car to leave and it won't start. Note: this car has ALWAYS Idled high since I bought it, Now it either idles high or NOT at all. It seems like it's not getting gas or TOO much. Whenever you start it, you have to pump the gas pedal 3 times and HOLD it, when it starts you better not let off for at least 20 Seconds or she'll die and will NOT start back. Can somebody help me?

Try pulling the engine coolant temp sensor, They often crack not sure why but the ceramic tip cracks makes the car hard to start, the car's idle may race while shifting gears, and often smokes. The sensor is on the right side of the engine when looking at it on the head. Easy to change and get too

Odometer jumping

Ho, that doesn't bode well for your tank monitoring. It was a fluke, but may keep doing it, if the odometer is a mechanical meter with numbers turning from the speedometer cable by plastic gearing that wears. Watch for it to jump at the next 100 mile turn over.
I understand your reluctance to change out the fuel level sender in the tank if that is why the gauge doesn't work. It is a lot of work. But have you checked to see if it's the dash gauge or the sender unit? A couple of electrical tests could determine that. If it is the dash gauge, that is comparatively easy to replace, and you could buy a used one-they seldom go bad. Otherwise, keep tracking your miles.

92 SL1 won't idle-wants to die without pushing gas-just put in new plugs

Remove, clean and inspect the idle control valve on the throttle body. These tend to clog up over time, or the stepper motor fails. Check this before anything else.

My 92 saturn sl burns through gas way too fast. I barely make it 30 miles without having to fill up again. What do i need to do to get better gas mileage?

Need some more info. How much gas are you putting in it? Does it smell like raw gas at anytime? Under the hood or under the car? Possible broken (rusted) fuel line. Any service engine lights on? Does the car seem to run well?

Car Wont Start Sometimes, happened 3 times in the last... 3 months last two times less than a two weeks of each other

Possibly a Coolant Temp. sensor unless it has been replaced recently?? Also check the connector with the yellow & black wire.It will be the lower of the 2 coolant sensors. The ODO Is mechanical & can only be serviced by replacing the complete guage cluster.Hope this helps

Odometor stop working on 92 Saturn SL1

Take out your gages under the dash and send them out to get fixed they are speed operated. What most likely happend is the dial in back the odometer is stripped.

2001 Saturn SL1 instrument panel stopped working....

erique000, on Feb 06, 2009 you posted a comment about your odometer and gas gauge stopped working. Did you ever find the problem. I have a 2001 sl1 and the same thing occured but also the rpm gauge and the speedometer registered nothing. They all just sit at e or 0. Approx 20 miles later the car died. It will still turn over, but won't start. If you have a chance, please respond to [email protected]
Thanks, Tom.

Speedometer and odometer not working 92 audi 100

I had similar problems with speedos in two 1990 Audi 100s, it was some time ago, but the contacts on the circuit boards on the back of the speedo deteriorate and do not give a good contact. I bought second hand speedos, only to find they had similar problems, eventually it was very easy to fix, I shaved matchsticks to chisel points and pushed them into the circuit boards to add pressure on the contacts and improve connection. After that repair drove the cars for a few years and the problem did not recur. It was a long time ago and I cannot remember exactly where the matchsticks were placed but look for soldered points near the edges of the boards. Regards, Michael
