Heating core has been plumbed in wrong or most likely has a leak in the system, as you are smelling the antifreeze - seems to me like the antifreeze is not reaching the core, have you mistakenly plumbed the intake/out take the wrong way round?, this would cause the windows to fog up as the heat is being taken away fro the core rather than being taken into the heater core

i just flushed my radiator now the antifreeze smell stopd but my windows still fog when i turn on my heat, a few weeks ago i had a radiator leak and i used some radiator leak stop do u think this could have clogged my heater core? if so how can i unclog it?

nothings leaking on the floor of the passenger side so i dont think the heating core is leaking

the only way is to flush the entire anti freeze from the whole of the car, this means draining the core, draining the engine, draining the expansion tank & draining the radiator, Again!, when you have drained everything reconnect all hoses & engine block plugs apart from the radiator top hose, put a garden hose inside the radiator & turn on the tap, place a suitable container under the engine bay under the top hose to collect the remaining antifreeze in the system as it is lethal to pets & wildlife, when the water runs clear let it run for a further minute then shut off the hose, drain all the system components again & fill with good quality antifreeze, if your windows are still fogging up but the heater works elsewhere then I suspect that you have a faulty heater matrix, this directs the warm air where you select it with the switches, these are relatively inexpensive to buy from a breakers but are an absolute pig to fit.

SOURCE: 1999 Ford Taurus, no heat.

Try checking the two pipes that go into and come out of the heater matrix, is one of them hot? if it is there is an air lock within the matrix, Also is the thermostat opening fully? Sorry i know you said you have changed it twice already but take it out check settings when it should open and close, then boil some water and test the thermostat

If you smell antifreeze it may be 3 possibilities: 1. you may have a leaking hose/hose connector , or water pump. 2. your heater core is bad and needs replaced. Unless you know what you are doing I would highly suggest taking to dealer for heater core replacement. The dash and steering colum has to be removed to get to the heater core. This is not an easy job believe me (about-900-1200 job). If you have your heater core replaced then also replace the climate control door. This is good preventative maintenance and also a a dollar saver. I would have a pressure check run on your radiator as a first thought. All you may have is a bad hose and that can easily be replaced.

Are heater cores expensive to change in these cars

Hi Carol, what makes you think your heater core is leaking,is your antifreeze container low,if not then it's not leaking, could cost 3 to 5 hundred bucks,I just changed mine in my truck,it was leaking on driver side and my windows were getting fogged up.I had to lift the dash up on mine to do,i did it 10 years ago,so this time was easy, here's a link on replacing your heater core,Does your heater get the inside warm, does it have a musky smell?if it is leaking, then your antifreeze container will be low,has it been raining alot, you said in your other post that water is on the passenger side, rain water can come thru the intake vent. Vapor comeing out of vents with heater turned off. smells like coolant not leaking on floor and not fogging windows up like when my heater core went bad 3 years ago and had it replaced.

Sounds like you have a small leak in the heater core. this is a small radiator that fits in the heating system to provide the heat in winter. It is an extension of the cooling system and therefore has antifreeze in the core. You may just have a hose leaking a tiny bit around the connetion.

I turn on the defrost and the windows fog up and the car smeels like antifreeze. Also feels like not enough air coming out defrost vents; most air coming out dash vents. It has been using a little water...

Hey Tbs,
You are correct in assuming it will get worse.. if you are leaking antifreeze, it wil not fix itself (DO NOT put any kind of "radiator stop leak" in it) .... take it to a qualified professional and tell them whast happening and let them repair it!! (a radiator shop - NOT the dealer)..

Antifreeze steam comeing through vents

Your heater core has a leak, it's like a small radiator that heats up and the blower motor blows air thru it to create heat in the car. It is leaking anti freeze into the heater box.

Heater immediately fogs all windows and there is a sweet odor in the cab of 2003 Buick Rendezvous, defroster works fine, but will not clear the windows after heat is put on

Sounds like a possible heater core failure(hole in it) the smell indicates to me the coolant(anti-freeze) is leaking into the passenger compartment.
Check the carpet in front of the front passenger seat for moisture, this would confirm heater core leak.
Good luck !

2001 jeep cherokee- had the heater core replaced in Feb. 2008, when you turn on heater barely any air, when you use defrost a snell and the windows fog up. When you turn off car sounds like ******* comes...

Sounds to me like the heater core is leaking again. If you're smelling antifreeze and the window fogs up then you're getting coolant into the heating system. Most likely cause is leaking hose to heater core or the heater core it's self.

Have heat..but windows fog up when the heat is turned on..any suggestioins

Does the air smell like antifreeze? If so your heater core could be leaking. If it doesn't then it sounds like somehow moisture got down into the vents so moisture is heated and blown up causing the windows to fog up.

Good luck

Antifreeze smell and smoke coming out of vents

You have a coolant leak most likely in the heater core. Try disconnecting your heater hoses and coupling them together, then running the engine to see if the leak goes away. If it does, I would have the heater core replaced.
