About a month ago my Jeep started to make a loud sqweeling sound when I turned the steering wheel. I added power steering fluid and it went away instantly. Yesterday I left the house for work and the Jeep did not have any power steering at all. It is very difficult to turn the steering wheel when I am moving slowly or at a stand still. Is it possible the power steering can just quit working; what might cause this? Is there a motor that may have gone out? Could it be a belt? I do not want to take it into a work shop until I have an understanding of why my power steering might have just stopped working; I do not want to be prey for the taking.
After I added power steering fluid I have not noticed any signs that the power steering was having any problems; it worked like a charm until then it was gone.
Any insight to this will be apreciated. Thank you.
I would check for leaks. After the car sits overnight look undernieth the cor on the drivers side. You are most likely going to see a tiny puddle of very thin oil. Check the tubing connections at the pump (mounted to the engine on the drivers side) and the front axel. Be certain to use Mopar power steering fluid when topping off. You may also need to get any air out of the system. Jack up the car so that both wheels are off the ground. With the engine turned off, turn the wheels to left and right lock positions a couple times. Lower the car, top off the fluid if necessary & give it a drive. Hope that works for ya.
