There is a neutral safety switch on cars with automatic transmissions which operates the reverse lights, and a reverse switch on manual transmission models.
You need to check voltage output on which version you have.

BF wagon eye level brake light is not working have tested globe and globe is working. Also reverse lights not working

If the other brake lights work, probably broken wire. Eye level meaning Suv hatch? If so, the wires tend to break at the rubber boot from the hatch to the body. The reverse lights run threw the neutral safety switch on the transmission. Could be a broken wire, most times it is the switch.

Car only starts in reverse and only drives in neutral

Sounds like a cable to the transmission is not adjusted up right, and/or the neutral safety switch is not adjusted right, if this applies to your Toyota Corolla.

Both reverse lights donot work.Is there a switch that could be bad, and if so where is it located at

If you've checked both light bulbs and they are good, then you are looking for the neutral safety switch. It's connected to the shift lever mechanism somewhere (sorry, I can't say where because I've never looked inside one of these vehicles, much less worked on one).

On automatic transmission models, the neutral safety switch is supposed to keep the starter from running unless in Park or Neutral, as well as turn on the reverse lights in Reverse.

  1. I tried to find a
Toyota Corolla Wiring Diagram 1998 |
If you go to your library you can look for free. Just not sure of location of of neutral safety switch for your year of car. In the back of motor manual is wire diagrams you will find switch there. Also GEO Prism is the same car.
  2. The last time I worked on a Prism it was a 1997 I found a bad wire connection at the shifter. Took 20 minutes to do repair and no parts.
  3. So I would check the switch in your console. Sometime they stick or a wire comes loose. Sometimes a little WD-40 shot to the switch helps.
