I have a 2002 Saturn VUE, the interior hood release is inop and won't disengage the main latch, does anyone know of an easy way to get the hood open, as it would be greatly appreciated.
I have the same year , model vue. I was told my cable is stretched. What I do is I get someone to hold the handle up in the car, then I go to the hood and pull up. I does work, a bit of a pain though when you are by yourself. I have the same year , model vue. I was told my cable is stretched. Have you tried to crawling under the car and using a pair pliers to pull on the cable. If you go under the car just in front of the fire wall you should be able to see the cable hanging there. Just pull ******* it.

Most of these come as a whole part.
The cable, the latch, etc. all together.
Though you may not need it all, that is the way you must buy it.
You can also try to look up junk yards or salvage yards and buy a used one, though that should be a last resort.
God bless your efforts.
I just used a flat head screwdriver and went in through the grill... one opening from top. Vertically placed screwdriver just behind where latch cable enters hood latch. (Looks like a "J" shape metal part). I placed minimal pressure pushing handle toward passenger side and hood released right away. Just did this 5 min ago after interior latch release broke off.
Your hood latch probably isn't returning to the right position for it to catch. This is commonly caused by one of two problems: (1) too much hardened grease and crud on the latch itself is keeping it from operating freely; or (2) the hood release cable has gotten rusty or kinked over time and is no longer releasing completely.
I would suggest testing the hood release cable before doing anything else. It's an easy test and it only takes a minute. Enlist the help of a second person to pull the hood release lever while you look at the hood latch. When your helper pull on the release, you should see the cable pull part of the hood latch. When they let go, that part should swing back to its prior position. Using a long-shafted screwdriver, see whether you can "help" that moving part move any further on its return path. If you can push the latch any significant amount, it's not returning all the way to its proper position, and your hood release cable is probably binding.
In the short term, if you manually push the hood latch back into position, you should be able to close your hood again. However, you'll have to do this each time you open the hood. In addition, you run the risk that, not too far in the future, your hood release cable will actually completely bind or snap, and then you'll have a much harder time opening your hood to replace the cable (or do anything else, like add oil or washer fluid).
if you can get you fingers through the front grill you could see if you can get to the latch to release it or try it with a long screw driver if you can see the latch and can not reach it
Saturn Vue hood release can be opened (if the cable is not broken) by disconnecting the cable from the back of the release lever, grabbing the ball on the end of the cable with some large pliers ("channel locks") and pulling hard. A metal "wire keeper" bracket clamped to the cable end under the hood to serve as a spacer and the release lever works. The purpose of this bulletin is to provide a procedure for opening the hood on the Saturn VUE and ION vehicles should the hood latch release cable mechanism become inoperative. VUE Hood Opening ProcedureModify the Saturn radio antenna by bending the antenna mast 1 in. (2.54 cm) above the antenna base to a 25 degree angle Open hood of similar vehicle to locate hood latch release cable to hood latch attachment point. Using modified antenna, note approximate location that antenna will have to enter in between fascia and hood to access the hood latch cable attachment point. This should be toward the left edge of the Saturn emblem. Also note position of the modified antenna base. It should be angled downward. Note: Use protective tape on the hood and fascia where the antenna will be inserted to protect the surfaces from scratches On vehicle with inoperative latch, insert antenna between hood and fascia and depress the hood latch cable until the hood is opened.
well yes it strecthes but you can move the hood latch assembly over alittle and it does help alot,,,but yes eventually they need replacing, common on the vue
This is not easy, I'll tell you this up front. If it were you'd be missing your battery in the morning....lol. First, you've got to go to a crafts shop or hardware store and find a piece of solid metal rod with a 1/16th diameter and 30 inches long. At one end you want to bend an "L" shape the width of a pair of vicegrips teeth. At the other end you want to wrap the rod around your hand, as best as possible(this will become your handle). With a good small flashlight in one hand and the rod in the other, lie one the ground and look up underneath the bumper towards the hoodlatch at the top of the radiator support. Within this area you'll see a small part of the pull cable. where this connects to the mechanism you want to pull it towards the drivers side fender. Your hood should now pop to the saftey latch position. open the hood and get your release cable replaced asap. Thank you, Dana. P.S. don't get discouraged, this takes patience and some time.
Didn't work, any specific thoughts?
