Mechanics have replaced the plugs and wires and fuel pump. The car did "cough" and stall out or recover sometimes. The alterrnator belt fried and it was replaced. Now it just cuts off quietly and will not restart. It turns over but will not fire up untill it "rests" or cools down. Please help
As above sounds like fuel starvation, but I would be more inclined to check your fuel filter as a starting point, but also try a different coil pack, as it sounds as the coil pack is over heating & then shutting off, which is why it will only restart after cooling & then upon restart it over heats again.
As these are very sensitive & can like the ECU get spiked when there is alternator/electrical issues, it only needs a sudden surge from a damaged alternator to "fry it" as you put it & other electrical sensors & computer components such as ECU & coil pack.
Hope this helps.....
It sounds like there could be something in the fuel tank blocking the pickup . When the engine is stopped and the pump stops sucking it could drift away from the pickup and the engine starts but when the pump starts sucking again it picks up the blockage again. Failing that it could be the computer control box. Around that era some boxes would fail at certain temperatures and then after cooling come good again. Hope this might help. col
SOURCE: can't find reset switch for fuel pump on mazda mpv
It is typically located in the rear of the vehicle in one of the side compartments. It has a red button on it. I would also check the fuel pump fuse, and relay.

Hello, I am going to make a few assumptions here. The vehicle has an electric fuel pump and you replaced it. The vehicle has fuel injection. The engine is actually cranking, just not starting, when you say "car still won't crank". You are getting fire to the spark plugs at the plug ends. You checked the fuel pump for power at the pump. No power, then you back traced the wire to the fuse block and checked the fuse to see if it was blown. If the fuse is good back trace the power to the ignition switch and/or ECM for power. You have power at the pump, check the ground and make sure it is connected properly. Will the pump run when someone turns the key on? Pump runs, check fuel manifold for pressure. No pressure, check the fuel filter for blockage, or replace it. Fuel pump doesn't run, new replacement pump is defective. There is usually some type of control module for the fuel pump on fuel injected vehicles. Good Luck, RAC
SOURCE: 2001 mazda mpv overheating both fans at not working PLEASE HELP!!
Ive noticed this in a couple different series of MPVs. I have had several of the earlier generation MPVs and theres lots of sensors on these things. If one of those sensors goes bad, then the others will not work correctly. Check your manual and see if there are any additional sensors you have not checked. Also there is a site that I used to get help with my MPVs. Its www.mpvclub.com and there may be a fix listed there. These guys specialize in MPVs. Although your relays may be working, they may not be receiving a signal from the correct sensor. Also from a little research it would appear that the cooling fans themselves have a tendancy to stop working. There are several people that are saying that they are wiring their fans to run manually. The AC fan seems to be the first to go and then the main fan. Try hooking the fans up to direct power and make sure the fans are not bad. Hope this helps...

I was browsing unsolved problems. If you still have the problem, I'll try to help you. But it's going to be awhile trying to communicate back and forth. First...Check the engine for spark. Take off a plug wire and stick a screw driver in the wire end and place the metal part of the screw driver next to something on the van that's metal. Have someone crank it over for just a second or two and see if a small spark jumps from the screw driver to the metal part. I'll check back for your answer.
