P0420 code I own a 99 Saturn SL2 SOHC. Friday, the SES light came on, Went to advanced auto and they said P0420 code came up so Sunday I changed the Main O2 sensor on the cata. On the way home light came back on so I turned around and went back. OBD showed same code. Reset. Yesterday was down to 1/4 tank gas, put in bottle of Lucas Complete Fuel System Cleaner and small bottle of Lucas Fuel Conditioner w/ Stabilizer per Saturn Of Cary Mechanic recommendation. On the way home, (about 5 miles) turned on AC, SES light came back on almost immediatly. Shows same p 0420 code. What is going on? Cat bad? Muffler? HELP! Please!

Also lubed or oiled the A/C compresser thingy and she no longer squeaks and the SES light doesnt not come on no matter how hard I put the petal to the metal!!!

Trouble Code: P0420

Catalyst System Low Efficiency (Bank 1)
Possible Causes:

Air leaks at the exhaust manifold or in the exhaust pipes Base engine problems (i.e., high engine oil or coolant usage.) Catalytic converter is damaged, contaminated or it has failed. Continuous engine misfire conditions, or weak or low coil output. Front HO2S or rear HO2S is contaminated with fuel or moisture. Rear HO2S is loose in the mounting hole (check it for a leak). Front HO2S older (aged) than the rear HO2S (HO2S-12 is lazy) .Here is what is listed in the Saturn repair guide.

Testimonial: "So should I change the front also? The front looks new so that is why we didnt touch it. We only bought and changed the rear because the rear looked rusted and burnt and was fused into the muffler. So should I change the front as well?"

Check your exhaust system for leaks.I don't want to tell you yeah to changing and it not that, also it states the Catalytic converter could be bad.I guess only one way to see is change it.To check Catalytic converter ,go to midas, they will check the whole exhaust for free, they also may have a scan tool that directly tells what the problem is.Replacing parts is expensively more if problem isn't solved.

SOURCE: 98 F150 idle drops, almost stalls

VERY COMMON ISSUE AT THE FORD DEALER I WORK AT, HERE IS WHAT i DO TO FIX IT. THIS WORKS 90% OF THE TIME, IT IS NOT A CURE ALL FOR STALL SLOW IDLE BUT A CLOSE SECOND.
Here are some of the causes of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

SOURCE: service engine light comes on , p0420 code

the light can be caused by any one or combination of over 200 trouble codes, go to any kragen or Autozone parts store and ask for a trouble code test, it is free, then record the code(s) they come up with and post them back on fixya

SOURCE: Pulled code p0420 on 99 chevy astro, 2wd, v6

from what i am finding the code means o2 sensors. they recommend replacing them and if this does not work than replacing the cat converter

The catalytic converter has an oxygen sensor in front and behind it. When the vehicle is warm and running in closed loop mode, the upstream oxygen sensor waveform reading should fluctuate. The downstream O2 sensor reading should be fairly steady. Typically the P0420 code triggers the Check Engine Light if the readings of the two sensors are similar. This is indicative of (among other things) a converter that is not working as efficiently as it should be (according to specs). It is part of the vehicle emissions system.

causes

A code P0420 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:

  • Leaded fuel was used where unleaded was called for
  • An oxygen sensor is not reading (functioning) properly
  • The engine coolant temperature sensor is not working properly
  • Damaged or leaking exhaust manifold / catalytic converter / exhaust pipe
  • Retarded spark timing
  • The oxygen sensors in front and behind the converter are reporting too similar of readings
possible soloutions

Some suggested steps for troubleshooting a P0420 code include:
  • Check for exhaust leaks at the manifold, pipes, catalytic converter. Repair as required.
  • Use a scope to diagnose the oxygen sensor operation (Tip: The oxygen sensor in front of the catalytic converter normally has a fluctuating waveform. The waveform of the sensor behind the converter should be more steady).
  • Inspect the downstream heated oxygen sensor (HO2), replace if necessary
  • Replace the catalytic converter
One thing to note is that many vehicle manufacturers offer a longer warranty on emissions-related parts. So if you have a newer car but it's out of it's bumper-to-bumper warranty, there still may be warranty on this type of problem. Many manufacturers give a five year, unlimited mileage warranty on these items. It's worth checking into.

SOURCE: 2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

I have a 1998 saturn SL2 with a LL1.9LL4 engine, want to switch out with a 1998 saturn SW2SW wagon with a 16 valve twin cam will this work? SL2 engine blown, SW2SW ****** is going!

If you are replacing a DOHC 1998 engine with another DOHC 1998 engine yes it will work. Saturn only made two engines from 91-99 and they all had the same block, difference some were SOHC and others were DOHC. The number "1" after SL or SC or SW means SOHC while the number "2" after SC or SL or SW means a DOHC.

Note if one is an auto and the other manual you are going to have to swap the flywheel/ring gear stuff over.

What type of engine do I have in my 1998 Saturn SL1?

if it is an SL1 it has a SOHC 1.9L. Basically the same engine was in all saturns 91-99, just different heads. the Sl2 had double over head cam and the Sl1 had SOHC.

What's the difference bteween a 99' saturn sl and a saturn sl1? My 99' saturn sl wont go in reverse, what might be wrong with it?

The SL2 is a DOHC 1.9L and the SL1 is a SOHC 1.9L. They have different transmissions, the DOHC uses a 15 inch wheel while the SOHC has a 14 inch wheel. So when you are shopping around for another transmission you must get one from the same type of engine. Saturn auto transmissions seem to be problematic, I stuck with the manual trannys and had very good luck.

I just need detailed instructions (as best as can be given in words) on how to change the upstream oxygen sensor on a 2003 Saturn Ion.

That is the sensor in front of the cat converter, either use a 7/8 combination wrench or a o2 sensor wrench . unplug it screw it out. (may need to soak threads w/liquid wrench) Install new sensor. If SES light is on go to Auto Zone. Advance auto to have codes cleared, they normally don't charge.

What short block will fit in my 99 sl2 i need to know what years if any that have the same block as my 1.9l dohc engine

Whatever year has the 1.9l dohc engine, but there always different changes to the motor, like intake manifold or the fuel rail. Make sure if you get a different 1.9l it is the dohc not sohc or you have to get the ecm for sohc. From what I know the 95-'00 SL2 have the 1.9l dohc.

Vibration in motor

If you have the car computer scanned, which many auto parts stores will do free of charge, you will be able to retrieve a code that can point you in the excact direction of the problem. Without being there myself, the only thing I can say to try that I did not see mentioned is to check the fuel injector on the #4 cylinder. They sell a tool called a noid light, you can disconnect the injector and connect this tool to the wires to see if you are getting an injector pulse. If you are getting a pulse then you may have a bad fuel injector.

Saturn sl2 emissin problem

If the SES light is on, take a paper clip bend it in a u-shape and jump the scanner input positions A B. This should flash the ses in sequesces to give you the trouble code, Please see the following link. http://www.troublecodes.net/GM/ Refer to the code to see what the issue may be. SES lit means that there is a emmissions related issue. Refer to the other links for additonal information on O2 sensor resistance, and the egr valve solinoid. Check the EGR is relitive easy for operation. Remove the vaccum hose and place a hose of similar suckon the hose to pull vaccum if the diafram underneith retracts, hold the vaccum by plugging off the tube with your touge if the diafram retracts, will not hold the vaccum, it is bad. The solinoid should read 40-60 ohms if good. http://www.saturnfans.com/forums/index.php http://www.aldlcable.com/sc/pages.asp?pageid=21
