You probably have a broken wire at the heater control. If the shaft nut is indeed loose, and if you pull on the knob, expect to break the remaining small wires that connects the heat-level potentiometer to its circuit board.
The wires can be fixed/resoldered, as opposed to buying a new unit for over $600.00. I hope that this solution helps you.
Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.

Try pulling off the temp. control knob and tightening the shaft nut.

  • Anonymous Dec 30, 2008

I doubt if pulling the knob off did any damage to the remaining wires. I have tightened the nut on many highlanders and they have left with a properly working system and have not had to replace the unit. there are many where the shaft was loose for awhile and the damage had been done and the tightening had no effect. but this is a quick, easy, first attempt at a repair.

I guess all services you need is replacement of filters, Oil, spark plugs if not recently changed
Belt replacement is worth at 90K, but price is too high! check this link: http://shop.autopartsfair.com/store/?N=11801+4294962486+1725+9318
it requires one hour work! or even less
other than this, if you have a service light on, either remove battery pole for a while to reset it, or ignore it and will disappear wft. some time!!!

How do you replace the high mount stop light bulb on the 2004 highlander?

Did my 2005 highlander. You replace from the inside. On the inside of the rear hatch, the top center plastic molding gentle snaps off. You twist out the bulb holder and replace with one #921 bulb

2005 highlander heater problem

I'm glad I could help. I'm reposting the solution below in case anyone needs it in the future. Please be sure to rate it for me!

Pull the temperature knob off and verify the thin 12mm nut is installed and tight behind it. I have seen several of these loosen up allowing the knob to turn but intermittently have no effect on temperature.
